The leaders are on the back nine Sunday as the third major of the 2022 golf season nears its completion. The U.S. Open is set to crown a national champion at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, for the first time since 1988, and it’s already been quite a journey to get to this point. With a star-studded leaderboard entering the final few the action and drama will surely be incredible coming home.
Will Zalatoris and Matthew Fitzpatrick, two top contenders at the PGA Championship one month ago, entered Sunday in the driver’s seat as co-leaders after 54 holes, and they are still in the thick of it down the stretch. Joining them atop the leaderboard is 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who entered the day two shots back but was tremendous across his front nine to even jolt into the solo lead at one point.
Meanwhile, Jon Rahm is looking to go back-to-back at the U.S. Open, while Rory McIlroy is attempting to win his first major since 2014. This as Zalatoris is trying to overcome his playoff failure at the PGA and Fitzpatrick aims to win his first major at a course where he previously won an amateur crown. Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick are both looking for the first PGA Tour wins of their careers.
