When do you need to pay for a course?
The vast majority of courses edX and Coursera are free to enroll in. If you want to upgrade to a version of the course that has features such as graded homework or a certificate of completion, you’ll usually have to pay a fee ($29-$300). It’s also worth noting that both Coursera and edX websites have financial aid, though edX’s process is more convenient.
What’s a Coursera Specialization?
Coursera Specializations are programs that include multiple related classes in order to provide a broader understanding of a subject or skillset.
If a course is part of a Specialization, you can try it for free for seven days and, once the trial is up, will have to pay $39-$79 per month until you cancel. But, you don’t have to use a trial; Look for the small print underneath when you click the “Enroll” button and find “Audit this course” — this way, you’ll be able to access course materials for free (but won’t receive certification).
What’s a certificate?
If you choose to upgrade to a paid version of an edX or Coursera course, you’ll receive a certificate when you successfully complete the class (unless the class is archived). You can show this to employers and schools, and add it to your CV, LinkedIn profile, and resume.
