‘We are opening up Shape Up sessions to women, as well as specific courses for adults with disabilities, come and see what you have to lose.’

Submitted by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council
Welwyn Hatfield residents can ‘Shape Up’ in the New Year, thanks to a free weight management programme run by Watford Football Club’s Community Trust in partnership with Herts County Council.
Shape Up is for men aged between 18 and 65 with a BMI of 30 or higher while a new course, Shape Up Together, is open to men and women with disabilities or mental health concerns with a BMI of 27 and above.
The 12-week Shape Up and Shape Up Together courses are being held at The Hive @ the Jim McDonald Centre in south Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Each 90-minute session will include physical activities as well information on nutrition and behaviour change to help participants successfully lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Shape Up Together will run on Thursday afternoons starting on January 6, from noon until 1.30pm for those with a physical disability and between 1.30 and 3pm for participants with a learning disability.
The first Shape Up session starts at 7.30pm on Monday, January 10.

Cllr Nick Pace, Executive Member for governance and public health, said: “Obesity is on the increase and can lead to other preventable health conditions.
“The Shape Up and Shape Up Together courses we are running at The Hive are not only a great way to lose weight and improve fitness as part of a supportive group but also of learning about what changes to make to your lifestyle over the longer term.”
Shape Up project officers Sadie Walden and Shaun Murphy, said: “Over the last six years, Shape Up has helped educate more than 1,700 men about sustainable exercise. In that time, our participants have lost over seven tons in weight.
“We are opening up Shape Up sessions to women, as well as specific courses for adults with disabilities, come and see what you have to lose.”
