If you’re looking for a higher-paying career and the education to help you get there, you’re in luck. The Ontario government is making more than 16,000 courses available across a bunch of different fields, without the steep tuition fees, and you can sign up now.
Ontario’s minister of labour, training and skills development made the announcement on Tuesday, July 20.
“Today, I’m pleased to announce that our government is investing $5.8 million in free online training from LinkedIn Learning to help 100,000 workers gain the skills they need to find good jobs and restart their careers,” said Monte McNaughton. “Through this initiative, workers will have access to more than 16,000 courses. Topics include fundamental business skills, like building complex spreadsheets, and creative skills like learning web design code.”
The free online training will be available until March 31, 2022, through LinkedIn, and employment career experts will coach each worker on which courses match their needs and personal career goals.
According to McNaughton, more than 250,000 jobs in Ontario are going unfilled and labour shortages are creating challenges for businesses.
“We are seeing many new opportunities in fields like information technology, finance, and business administration. This includes careers as computer programmers and interactive media developers making an average of $81,400 per year. Financial and investment analysts who make around $78,000 per year. And human resources professionals who earn about $72,000,” said McNaughton.
The funding will come from the government’s $115 million skills development fund, which addresses, “[…] challenges to hiring, training and retraining workers because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to a press release.

Dr. Bonnie Henry said the surge in COVID-19 cases could mean the virus becomes endemic as the season shifts.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has gripped the world for almost two years, could end when the season shifts to spring, according to one of B.C.’s leading public health officials.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry told CBC during a year-end interview that the new Omicron variant, which is causing huge spikes in case numbers across Canada, is creating a “new game” in the pandemic.
Despite the rapid acceleration in case numbers, she believes the virus will become endemic after the winter months.
Dr. Henry said: “The way the virus is changing with Omicron — that is leading us to that [endemic] place sooner.”
“The type of illness it’s causing, with most of us being protected through vaccination, means that we are going to get to that place.”
Endemic means that the virus would have a constant presence and a predictable spread, similar to what malaria or flu has, instead of the current pandemic status.
Dr. Henry did say that there are still uncertainties ahead but she believes “we’re getting there” and that “we’re always going to have to learn some of the lessons from this.”
Multiple provinces are bringing back COVID-19 restrictions in an attempt to curb the rising number of cases.
In Ontario, there are new restrictions on capacity limits, an 11 p.m. closing time for bars and restaurants, and a delay to in-person learning at schools across the province.
In B.C., the province reached its maximum capacity for COVID-19 testing, as cases continue to rise. Testing locations have seen extremely long wait times, and restrictions have changed in response to the Omicron variant.
