The Stanislaus County Library is participating in Beanstack’s Fifth Annual Winter Reading Challenge from Jan. 1 to Jan. 31 that is sponsored by Lerner Publishing Group. “Read for a Better World” encourages readers of all ages to explore diversity, empathy, and action through literature. The libraries have unlimited access to Lerner’s “Read for a Better World” themed books for the month of January through the challenge activities. During the month, readers are challenged to help the libraries reach the community goal of 300,000 minutes read. Register on Beanstack to participate in the Winter Reading Challenge 2022.
Looking to learn something new in the New Year? The Library is a great place to start. Thanks to a grant from the California State Library, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, Stanislaus County Library customers can now enjoy a number of online resources designed to provide skill-building, job training, test preparation, and professional development.
Customers now have free access to the following databases:
Coursera: Online courses taught by top instructors from over 200 leading universities and companies.
LinkedIn Learning: Online learning taught by industry experts, offering more than 3,000 courses and 150,000 videos on business, technical, and creative skills.
Northstar Digital Literacy: Boost skills in computer basics, Microsoft Word, online career searching, and more.
Skillshare: An online learning community with thousands of classes for creative and curious people. Create an account for three months of free access to Skillshare Premium.
You can explore these and other databases on the website using your library card.
The Riverbank Library is at 3442 Santa Fe and is open on Monday and Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., closed on Friday, and on Saturday from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Currently the Riverbank Library has a Find a Snowman Hunt and craft kits for kids while supplies last.
The Riverbank Library received at home COVID tests and have distributed all of them but have been told that they will be given more to give out to the public.
On Monday, Jan. 10, 4 p.m. join the library for some STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) fun on Zoom. After a story is read, participants will learn about a STEAM concept and work on an engaging STEAM activity. This month they are going to explore lights and circuitry. Make your own simple circuit to light an LED bulb. Supply kits for this month’s activity will be available for pickup by registered participants the week before the program. This program is suggested for grades K-3, but all ages are welcome. Registration is required and space is limited.
Register now for General Virtual Trivia Night on Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Put your knowledge to the test. All ages are invited to General Virtual Trivia Night on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. with questions on all topics, including books, history, pop culture, and more. Participants will need two devices to participate; Zoom to view the questions and Kahoot! to answer them. Registration is required. If you choose to work in a team for this quiz, only one person per team needs to register and download Kahoot! Once you sign up, you will be sent the link to the Zoom meeting. Be sure to download both Zoom and Kahoot! prior to the program.
Register for a Teen Book Box. Each box in this FREE teen subscription program will contain a handpicked reading recommendation based on your preferences, treats, and swag. Return the book and box by their due date but keep the treats and swag. Teens can register each month for another exciting box, to be picked up at the Stanislaus County Library location of their choosing the week of Jan. 17 through Jan. 24. Register now for Virtual Book Chat: Mystery on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. Theme for the month of January is mystery. This virtual event is a fun and easy way to discuss books with other book lovers. They meet on Zoom monthly to chat about what we are reading, or what we have read, focused around a general theme. Register to receive the Zoom link. Questions? Call 209-558-7814.
Friends of the Riverbank Library will meet on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. The Friends of the Riverbank Library meet the third Thursday of the month. Come by and support your local library.
Virtual Job & Career Chat on Monday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. Are you a job seeker or looking to change careers? Meet on Zoom and chat about what strategies have been working for you, while also learning from others. Librarian Vicki Salinas will share resources available through the library and community. Riverbank Library Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. Join in at the Riverbank Library and share your love of books. Book clubs allow community members to expand their knowledge of books through meaningful discussions with others. This month the book club will discuss The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict.
Virtual Gardening Program: Planting and Pruning Bare Root Fruit Trees will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thinking about planting a bare root fruit tree but not sure what to plant, how to plant, or how to prune? Or maybe you’ve already planted your tree but need some pruning tips. Join in for a virtual gardening program led by the UCCE Master Gardeners of Stanislaus County.
