RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent U.S. Rep. Fred Keller, R-Kreamer, center, listens to a student describe her work during a walking tour of the Career and Technical Education program at Williamsport Area High School on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022. The tour included representatives from local industry and education involved with the labor force.
U.S. Rep Fred Keller, R-Kreamer, came away from Williamsport Area High School impressed with the programs there preparing students for the workforce or higher education.
Keller toured the different career and technical education departments with school leaders and others Wednesday.
The lawmaker, whose 12th Congressional District includes Lycoming County, said young people being trained in the area will be needed for jobs everywhere.
“We want them to stay here,” he said. “But the footprint is across the globe.”
Keller said he was taught the value of education by his grandmother, who was a teacher.
“You can’t build a house without a foundation,” he said.
Keller said he liked the fact that the hands-on education combined with classroom teaching is being done under one roof.
That way, he said, students can see how everything they learn can be integrated in a job.
“They can take a class and apply it,” he said.
Students can learn while earning college credits when still in high school.
“I think it’s a model of how it can work,” Keller said. “I think they are all quality programs.”
District Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers said the tour gave people an opportunity to see what career and technical programs are available.
“It’s exciting to see a student on a career path,” said Jason Fink, Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce president. “And then continue on to more education or work.”
Partners from industry, government and education were able to take part in the tour of educational programs.
“It was a great day,” said Matt Fisher, director of Career and Technical Education. “It was great to be able to showcase what we have.”
The students, he said, seemed to enjoy sharing what they know.
“You could see the zeal in their eyes,” he said.
