HARRIS — U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman met with Delta County Chamber members and other business leaders at the new Horizons Steakhouse on the 12th floor of the Island Resort and Casino recently.
Approximately 40 Chamber members attended the event, including members of the Chamber board of directors, EDA board members, Visit Escanaba personnel, Delta Force participants, and other community members, including State Senator Ed McBroom. The event was organized by the staff at the Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Congressman Bergman’s staff and The Island Resort and Casino.
Chamber Executive Director Vickie Micheau welcomed Bergman and introduced him to attendees. Bergman spoke about various issues, ranging from security, to the work ethic of those in Delta County.
Bergman then answered questions from attendees. Two questions centered on the difficulties business owners and leaders are currently having in hiring workers to staff their businesses.
Bergman said members of the business community, parents and educators will be tasked with helping young people to get excited about all of the opportunities available to them.
“It starts in the education system,” Bergman said.
Teaching young people a good work ethic also starts at home, he added.
Bergman shared how his mother would often give him projects to work on, such as cutting the lawn and shoveling snow, “You name it — she was a farm girl — and there were always chores to be done,” he said. “But I can tell you that I’m a better person because of my mother and my dad. They built in me that personal sense of pride in a job well done.”
Referring to his upbringing and the importance of getting people to work in order to acquire practical experience, he gave this piece of wisdom: “What the hand touches, the mind remembers.”
Working together was the theme of the latter part of Bergman’s presentation. “We all have to work together, whether it be with federal, state or local representatives. We are all in this together,” he said.
“Can we strive to be a good member of the community? Yes,” he said. “We can do that, but it takes effort,” He also touched on fiscal responsibility, discussing the idea that, in his words, “More government is not better government,” and noted that we all have to figure out ways to resolve our differences in order to come together.
“This is the beauty of the United States. We’ll only get better if we can find a way to negotiate,” he said, noting that “we are all better when we can leave a meeting with someone feeling better and feeling valued for our personal opinions.”
Chamber Executive Director Vickie Micheau said that the legislative committee of the Delta County Chamber of Commerce coordinates educational forums, public policy events, and opportunities to interface with government and business leaders.
“We are thankful to Congressman Bergman for taking the time to share his thoughts on the business climate in the Upper Peninsula, and answer questions from business leaders and chamber members,” Micheau said. “We are pleased that he got to spend time with us in the U.P. to discuss the challenges our business leaders and community members are facing in their daily lives.”
The future looks bright to Bergman. Commenting on the climate in Washington, D.C., he said, “I’m here to tell you that we’ve got good people on both sides of the aisle trying to do good things.”
“There are good, hard-working folks here,” Bergman said, “and I am honored to be serving all of you in Delta County.”
