PETALING JAYA: Six policemen were detained after a drug suspect escaped from the Bayan Baru police lockup in Penang last night.
Penang police chief Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the policemen have since been remanded for three days beginning today to assist in the investigation.
“Under the provisions of the law, we are allowed to detain them for the purposes of gathering information. I saw fit to take drastic measures against the officers on duty during the incident.
“As the Penang police chief, I will never tolerate officers who are careless in performing their duties,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
According to Shuhaily, the escapee, Azizi Mohamad Hassan, 33, was arrested on April 20 under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.
He said the six policemen were being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code, for negligence in handling a person under custody and resisting arrest.
He urged members of the public with information to come forward and contact the authorities.
