Prime Minister Mia Mottley is urging all Barbadians to take advantage of opportunities provided for training and education.
Speaking at the launch of Phase 2 of the National Transformation Initiative’s partnership with e-learning platform Coursera, Mottley said training and education are necessary for Barbadians to be considered world-class global citizens.
‘If we want to assert that Barbadians can be global citizens with Bajan roots, if we want to assert that Barbadians are capable of commanding jobs wherever they can be found across this world then we have to assure that what they see is what they get and that we deliver on the promise that we can effectively execute,” she said.
Stating that the timeline to ensure Barbadians are world-class in seven years has been adjusted from 2027 to 2030 due to the pandemic, Mottley said there are a lot of skills that are no longer needed.
“In this world, you will have to be retrained at least three or four times with the pace at which technology is changing all that we do,” she said.
Mottley said the three-year agreement with Coursera is aimed at bringing learning opportunities to citizens wherever they are.
“I know that 10 years of consistent application will make us more than world-class,” Mottley said.
Dr Allyson Leacock, Director of NTi, said the partnership with Coursera began a year ago and 24,000 people signed on to do courses.
She said Coursera has offered the ability to customise content to make it more relevant to Barbadians.
In Phase 2, courses in agriculture and waste and water management are among the new courses available to Barbadians on the learning management platform.
All courses are free of cost.
