Due to an increased demand and request for additional classes, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department will be offering another set of ORV safety and marine classes June 26 and July 9, respectively.
The ORV safety class will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 26, and go until 4 p.m. The marine safety class will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. The minimum age to attend both classes is 12 years old.
“Any ORV operator 16 years old and younger riding on public or private land is required to pass an approved ORV safety course,” said Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont.

Any motorized boat operator born after June 30, 1996 is required by law to pass an approved boater safety course and to carry a boater safety certificate. In addition, boater education is also required for all personal watercraft operators born after Dec. 31, 1978.
Parents and adults are also being encouraged to attend the class with their children, or to take the course themselves.
Both classes will be at the Cheboygan County Commissioners’ meeting room, on the lower level of the Cheboygan County Building. Students for both classes will need to use the north entrance of the building, bring their own lunches, and will need to attend the class for the entire time.
Class size is limited for both classes and both classes in May filled up quickly. Pre-registration is required to attend.
Interested parties need to visit michigan.storefront.kalkomey.com to register for the class.
“Each interested student will need to sign up for an account on the Michigan DNR safety course website,” said Clarmont. “Once an account is created, scroll down and click on upcoming events for the safety course type you are interested in.”
Clarmont said the students will then be able to find classes taking place in the area, including the ORV and boater safety classes.
These classes are being offered by the sheriff’s department free of charge to anyone who wants to take the course.
Any questions regarding these two classes can be directed to Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department Recreational Division Sgt. Earl Manuel, who will be teaching the classes. He can be contacted by calling (231) 627-8888.
