IIT Bombay is offering a 12-week free online course on Quantum Mechanics for students on the SWAYAM NPTEL platform. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is an educational initiative by the Ministry of Education involving 7 IIT including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IISc Bangalore to promote quality education through e-learning methods. Several courses are offered for free on the platform, and even certificates can be obtained by paying Rs 1000 and clearing an exam.
The course will be conducted by P Ramadevi who is a professor with IIT Bombay whose field of research is mathematical physics. She has also been working on knot invariants from Chern-Simons theory and topological strings. Students who successfully meet the required criteria, which is an average assignment score of 10 out of 25, and an average exam score of 30 out of 75, will receive certificates with their name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Bombay. However, only e-certificates will be provided and no hard copies will be dispatched.
The course requires participants to have done the sophomore course on quantum physics and applications where Schrodinger equation, wave function and expectation values are taught. Therefore it would be most beneficial for the following students:
This is a first level course in the Dirac’s bra(ket) notation which will set foundation to take up advanced level courses. Some of the topics that will be covered are as follows:
The course will be conducted from 24 January to 15 April 2022, and the examination will be held on 24 April 2022.
