DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a partnership with Google and a grant of $1 million from the tech giant for the education of DC residents.
The initiative will be supporting Community College Prep Academy (CC Prep) and advancing its IT Pathways program. Through the massive grant, 250 individuals will receive scholarships for a Google Career Certificate training program.
Students — regardless of whether they have any degrees or experiences — will gain job-ready skills in high-growing fields within a period of three to six months and will be provided with additional support including career coaching.
“This partnership with Google aligns with our larger goal of ensuring DC residents have access to jobs and careers in high-demand, high-growth, and good-paying industries,” Mayor Bowser said on Friday, March 25 at the eighth annual March Madness hosted by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. “We’re proud to work with Google to give more Washingtonians a fair shot.”
The program aims at boosting access to essential workforce training for disadvantaged students and people underrepresented in tech fields, as well as increasing the economic potential of local DC workers.
“Google calls Washington, DC home, and we’re committed to investing in the local community and its residents,” said Andrew Dunckelman, Head of Impact and Insights at Google.org, about the project. “We’re proud to work with the Community College Prep Academy to offer the Google Career Certificates. This initiative will help job seekers increase their economic potential and enable them to gain the skills needed for in-demand jobs in the nation’s Capital.”
