The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Monday, restored the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oborevwori Sheriff as the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the state in the 2023 general elections.
Oborevwori had approached the Court of Appeal to challenge the Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo against his eligibility on grounds of alleged discrepancies in his certificates.
The Court of Appeal in the judgment delivered by Justice Peter Olabisi Ige, voided and set aside the Federal High Court judgment of July 7 delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, which nullified the nomination of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, following a suit instituted by Olorogun David Edevbie. Ige said witnesses would have been called since the matter is founded on presentation of forged documents.
The Appeal Court among other grounds in the judgment, said the Federal Court misconstrued the provisions of Section 29 of the Electoral Act. The reasoning of the Federal High on the interpretation of Section 29 is erroneous.
Speaking at a thanksgiving, Oborevwori said he had come to the chapel to appreciate God for giving him victory.
He said that it was the Almighty God that gave him the victory at the Court, pointing out that the victory was for everybody in the state.
Oborevwori said; “it is God that gives power”, stressing that nobody can upturn what God had ordained. Saying that Delta State is one, he said; “by the grace of God, in 2023, we shall come here again to give thanks to God.
“We have come here to give thanks to God for giving us victory. The victory is for everybody; it is God that gives power and nobody can upturn what God had ordained.
“When we came to the chapel to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the creation of Delta State last Saturday, I promised God that if He gives me victory at the Appeal Court, l shall come to the chapel to give thanks to Him”.
Chaplain of Government House Chapel, Venerable Charles Osemenam in a brief sermon, harped on the importance of thanksgiving to God. He prayed for sustained peace and unity in the state.
Also, Oborevwori in a statement, dedicated his victory at the Court of Appeal to God and all Deltans.
The Speaker in the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Dennis Otu, said he has always had confidence in the Nigerian Judicial system. He said: “I have implicit confidence in our Judicial system as it remains the last hope of the common man and I am so glad with the judgment of today. I commend the Judiciary for this judgment. To God be the glory.
He said; “The Appeal Court, Abuja has given judgment in my favour. This victory is dedicated to our Almighty God and to all Deltans. This is our victory and it is for all of us because we are one family.
Therefore, let us put the past behind us now and join forces together towards winning the main general elections for PDP in 2023”.

The Chairman of Degema Local Government Council of Rivers State, Hon Michael John Williams, has enjoined leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward One, Bakana, to work in synergy and avoid acts that promote division within the party.
The Council boss made the appeal on Monday, when he played host to the leadership and stakeholders of the PDP in Ward One, at the Council Secretariat in Degema.
The Council chairman, who hails from Ward One in Iyalla’s Compound, Bakana, told his kinsmen that they were blessed and fortunate to have a full political Ward and have benefited greatly from the party, adding that it is only when they continued to work together, that they could achieve greater results for the good of their people.
He noted that though politics is a game of interest, it should however be played with decorum and decency, as not everyone, including close family members, were expected to support the political aspirations of anyone.
While calling for support for the party and his administration, the chairman stated that power comes from God alone, adding that more opportunities will come to members of the PDP when they work together and win the forthcoming general elections.
On their appeal for more appointments and construction of a shore protection for Iyalla’s Compound, the Council boss, who disclosed that his administration had appointed over 150 persons, assured that more people would be given appointments, after a cabinet reshuffle that is in the offing.
He added that the administration would equally look into the issues of soil erosion and shore protection.
The DELGA boss also gave the assurance that the ongoing Memorial Hall reconstruction would soon be completed, as his administration had fully committed funds to it.
Earlier, leader of the PDP in Ward One, Dr Deinbo Bagshaw, who presented gifts to the Council Chairman, commended him for his infrastructural revolution in the LGA.
Dr Bagshaw particularly thanked the Council Chairman for undertaking the reconstruction project of the Memorial Hall of their progenitor, Chief India John Yellowe (Iyalla), as well as other numerous projects, spread across the LGA.
The Ward leader, however used the occasion to appeal for the Chairman’s support to address the issues of soil erosion and shore protection, as the area was adversely impacted by oceanic waves.
While thanking the chairman for the appointments given to members of the party in the Ward, Dr Bagshaw asked for more opportunities, as well as empowerment programmes for their people.
The meeting was attended by the leadership of the Ward, including ward and LGA executives of the PDP.

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) on Monday, welcomed a former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, back to its fold after he (Shekarau) had been in the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, for about three months.
The Tide source had reported that Shekarau had hinted at defecting from Rabiu Kwankwaso’s NNPP, citing “betrayal of trust.”
Shekarau had, in May 2022, parted ways with the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and dumped the All Progressives Congress for the NNPP, taking thousands of his supporters with him.
In 2014, Shekarau, who was one of the founding fathers of the APC, dumped the party for the PDP in protest against what he described as handing over of the party structure in Kano State to Kwankwaso, the then governor of the state, following the latter’s defection to the party from the PDP.
However, in the build-up to the 2019 general election, Shekarau dumped the PDP and returned to the APC in 2018 following the dissolution of the State Executive Committee of the PDP and the setting up of a caretaker committee by the party (PDP).
Speaking on his latest defection from the NNPP, Shekarau said, “All the agreements we had with him were betrayed by Kwankwaso and his boys and they did not accommodate one single person from my camp.
“We reached an agreement to accommodate my supporters into various elective positions in the party, but until now, the committee set up could not accommodate one single person apart from the senatorial slot given to me.
“I will never be a party to injustice. My integrity is utmost and not any political position that will make me compromise it and that of my people. Nobody will use position or money against my integrity.
“I am a man of honour and integrity but his governorship candidate (Abba Yusuf), who was given the responsibility to look at areas to accommodate my people into various elective positions never for one single day did so or even called for meeting, let alone accepting my supporters to contest.
“Nobody will use money to change my conscience. I was a governor for eight years in Kano and people believed in my integrity. “I am still living in a rented house in Abuja and never allocated a single plot of land to myself when I served as Governor in Kano and I challenge anyone who knows my plot of land to expose it.”
Welcoming Shekarau to the party in Kano on Monday, the national chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, stated that the party would not be distracted by peddlers of lies and that the party would grow stronger, adding that, “…we’re going to win Kano and we’re going to win everywhere.”
“I want to thank all the supporters of His Excellency Ibrahim Shekarau, who in spite of the rain…defied the rain and have come here in their hundreds of thousands. There are so many outside there that you can’t see within this arena. And I believe that, God willing, we shall overcome all distracting forces, we shall work hard as if our lives depend on it… and I want to tell you all that we are going to overcome whatever difficulties we may have.
“Our party is getting more united, and we thank the effort of our leader, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who has done everything possible to bring every member on board,” Ayu added.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State and former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has expressed fear that the major political parties in the country are on the verge of collapse.
He said the present situation with the political parties is a far cry from what obtained in 1999, when elections were won on merit as the military supervised them and allowed rules and regulation systems to operate, unlike the present, where parties no longer abide by their principles but operate on the whims and caprices of their emergent owners.
Essien raised the concern in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, when he received the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, and former Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, who was in Eket to seek his support for the governorship in 2023.
Essien, a one-time House of Representatives member, described as sad the current situation where each party now has an owner, and the owner decides who does what, stressing that the country could not continue like that.
He said, “Let me use this opportunity to alert all of us that the major political parties are on the verge of collapse throughout the country. The gradual persistent erosion of political cultures in the parties since 2003 has led them to the situation they have found themselves today.
“Parties no longer abide by their principles, rules and regulations but have been allowed to operate on the whims and caprices of the emergent owners. The organs of authority, direction and coordination have become extinct.
“This is responsible for the multifarious harvest of court cases after each primary election and the calamities which often befall these parties. Political parties were not run the way they were now in 1999 when we came out to contest elections. Whoever won elections then won it on merit.
“But from 2003, few people will just sit somewhere, write names and announce. Indiscipline, disorder and outright impunity have a terminal point. This terminal point has been reached by major parties, thus enabling the small parties without structures to cause them a stir and the current panic for relevance and positions.
“There is a revolution in the offing-a spontaneous protest against the numerous wrong ways of doing things. The current situation is a call to return to the basics, and the time is now. The big parties may have to give way in 2023 for a restart of our democratic experience.”
He commended senator Akpanudoedehe for showing how politics should be played by visiting stakeholders who do not belong to his political party to inform them of his desire to contest as governor of the State in 2023.
He wished other candidates would do the same, adding, “This is good politics and the right way to play it. Politics is not supposed to be played in rigidly compartmentalised platforms devoid of the entry and exit of members.
“Once a nomination has been won within the party, the candidates are free to canvass for support across the board because if elected, you will become the Governor of the entire state and not of the political party. I commend your determination and persistence in being governor of the state since 2011.
“As a politician with a sound intellectual base, you are eminently qualified to be Governor. However, at a stage, you should consider stepping aside to be a kingmaker, playing advisory role which is most needed in the fast deteriorating democratic practice base on party politics.”
The former minister, who is the Atta of Eket, listed some outstanding developments the Eket people shall be expecting from the next administration in the state to include, the establishment of the Akwa Ibom Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commissíon, Delineation of local government area boundaries and resuscitation and development of Qua River Hotels in Eket, and establishment of a befitting low-density Housing Estate, among others.
Earlier, the governorship candidate, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, noted that he joined the NNPP platform to actualise his vision for Akwa Ibom, noting that he decided to visit Chief Essien because of his relevance in Akwa Ibom politics and as the political leader of Eket Senatorial District.
He assured that if voted into office, Akwa Ibom Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commissíon would be established without delay and appealed to
Chief Essien to support him to win in Eket.
“The PDP government has not been fair to Eket. There are a lot of votes in Eket. Vote for me, and I will complete all projects that Udom will abandon in Eket. I will empower our people to develop themselves so that we can build a peaceful state. You cannot be talking about maintaining peace when people are hungry,” he said.
