The trauma sensitive classes will take place every fortnight from 28 September at the Human.Kind Yoga Studio on Halifax Street.
Domestic violence continues to be major health and social issue that impacts 1 in 6 women and 1 in 16 men. In an effort to support domestic violence survivors and help them on their healing journey, a new free yoga initiative is being launching in Adelaide this week.
Mentor, Author, and domestic violence survivor Amy Hill is launching free vinyasa yoga classes for DV survivors from Wednesday 28 September.
“I went through domestic violence for about 10 years and one of the things I found really healing was yoga,” says Amy.
“Yoga was huge for me. As soon as I got back onto the mat, all of these emotions came out of me, and I had the opportunity to connect back to myself… because for such a long time when I was experience DV, I was so disconnected with myself.”
Amy shared that while it didn’t initially start going to yoga to heal, the practice had a profound, positive impact. So much so, that Amy was inspired that gift this experience to other survivors.
The classes are designed to be trauma sensitive and create a safe environment for fellow survivors to connect and not feel alone.
“I just felt so isolated and felt like nobody in the whole world knew what I was going through. But there were more people like me. And to be in a room where everyone has had that experience is profound in itself,” says Amy.
To be “trauma sensitive” or “trauma informed”, Amy says, is to be aware of what traumas people could or have experienced. Amy has made modifications to these classes to avoid triggering the participants.
“I have made modifications before, during and after the class and also in terms of actual class structure,” she said.
“For example, I wouldn’t tell people to close their eyes. It’s optional. They can lower their gaze if they prefer. The final pose shavasana, or ‘corpse pose’, requires you to lie on your back which is quite vulnerable for people. While it is still offered, people can lay on their side in the fetal position if its more comfortable. It’s just about making adjustments to be aware of people’s sensitives.”
These free vinyasa yoga classes will be hosted at the Human.Kind Yoga Studio on Halifax Street, which was kindly donated. Classes will occur every fortnight on Wednesdays at 12:30pm from Wednesday 28 September.
Amy says class capacity is capped at 22 people per class, but if the demand is there, she can seek to get a bigger space and host additional classes. She will also be offering cups of herbal tea at the end of the class to encourage further connection.
