Humans are born with different skills and talents. While this means that the same person can sing and calculate numbers while enjoying playing sports with friends, it is imperative to know which of these activitiesis comparatively the stronger point. A very common mistake that many students make is that they work on the weak aspects of their talents and intelligences. This may lead to a temporary benefit or even an acquired skill set but cannot match the superiority of an inborn strength for the same skillset another individual may have. Classifying all the human capabilities into skillsets and intelligence, career counseling and guidance can help you rank these in the order of strong to weak.
Starting from the school level the students can be encouraged to pick up the right subjects, extracurricular activities, and certifications that complement the skills and talent of the individual. This direction not only helps you find out your key strengths but also guides you to work on it and most importantly utilize it to your advantage. Selecting the right subjects or streams is most likely the first step you will take for providing direction to your career and choosing the same accurately and wisely is the first benefit of the career counseling process.
Keeping in view the importance of career counseling and guidance, the Department of School Education in collaboration with UNICEF India, announced an online career guidance programmein May 2020.The career guidance programme, called Manzilein, is for students of Classes 9th to 12th who have been enrolled with the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) or in any other government school of the union territory.
The official website www.jkcareerportal.org has complete information on over 550 careers, over 20000 colleges and over 2.5 lakh programmes in 16 countries across the globe. Further, information on over 1150 entrance exams and over 1100 scholarships is also available on the website.During the lockdown period, when all educational institutes were closed, this initiative of the government helped students to prepare their future plans to select career of their choice. The process is very simple. Any student can log in to the website www.jkcareerportal.org and explore a large number of career options for him or her. Just the board registration number of the student needs to be used as password during the login process.
In case, the students don’t know their registration number or are unable to login, they can contact their respective school/District Nodal Officer/School Nodal Officer/Nodal officer at JKBOSE or the counseling cell of Directorate of School Education Kashmir or Jammu.
Similarly, the department of School Education, on 15th September 2020, launched an online process-based, standardized and scalable career education platform for students. The initiative is a step towards transforming the way in which our youth look at building their future in the world of possibilities. The online career education platform, under career education initiative of J-K government in partnership with Transform Foundation aims to harness the energy, enthusiasm, and exuberant dreams of the youth of J&K.  The overall intent is to enable curiosity, creative thinking, and awareness in youth along with decision-making skills which will lead to continuous, lifelong learning and career development. The online platform has initially been launched in two districts, Ganderbal and Udhampur of J&K UT and is likely to be expanded in all the districts in near future.
The results of 12th class in Kashmir Division are a few days from now. While as in Jammu Division, the annual examination schedule is already out and the students will qualify their 12th class after some time from now.
Now think that you have qualified the 12th examination. It is the time to think over the career options & courses after 12th and many more related questions that are puzzling in your mind about what should you choose after 12th. This is one of the most confusing periods in the students’ life. First you should counsel yourself.
Suppose that you have chosen PCM group or PCB group or Commerce or Arts in 12th standard. It means you have chosen your area of interest. Do not surprise or tense. You have done your best. But yes, off course, if you wish to change your field for higher studies, you can go through many options according to your interest.
A student having Art stream in 12th standard can pursue his further study in art, humanities, management, media, fashion, journalism and tourism field while as a  student having PCB or biology in 12th standard can pursue his further study in medical, pharmacy, science research and all art group fields.A student having PCM or Math in 12th standard can pursue his further study in engineering & technology, pharmacy, architecture, and all art group fields.
And moreover, students from any of above streams can pursue their further studies in law, management, fashion, textile, social work and library science.

This is just an overview of the vast career field. In future we will be giving detailed and structured counseling in various sub-fields one by one.
