You don’t need to make it into the slim 6.2% of accepted students and pay tuition fees at The University of Chicago, one of the top 15 schools in the world, to enroll in its courses.
Most of the top schools around the world — including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Columbia, and Cambridge — offer free massive open online courses (MOOCs) on e-learning platforms like edX and Coursera. (You can read about what edX is and what Coursera is here). And that includes UChicago, home to alumni such as scientist Carl Sagan and movie critic Roger Ebert.
Right now, you can take multi-week UChicago courses that range from law and technology to the science of neurobiology or climate change. You can learn for free, or earn a certificate of completion with a small fee.

This course teaches you about everyday neurobiology, including how the nervous system produces behavior and the neuroscience behind our common problems.

Understand software-defined networking and how it’s changing the way communication networks are managed, maintained, and secured.

Broken up into seven week-long topics, this course explores the relationship between law and technology as tech becomes an increasingly important piece of modern life. It focuses on US law, but some comparisons are made to other laws around the world, especially in Europe.

This course delves into the science of global warming and the forecast of humans’ impact on Earth’s climate. It’s designed for a curious audience and doesn’t require much scientific background. Students look at climate through the lenses of physics, chemistry, biology, earth and atmospheric sciences, and even some economics.

While Global Warming I introduces the scientific background of numerical models in the Earth system and climate sciences, this course provides the Python exercises to explore them. It’s designed for people who are new to Python programming, but you still may want to use other Python courses or online tutorials to get the gist of Python syntax.
