Calvert County recently announced the availability of free wifi at select community centers.

Citing the impact of Covid-19 and the importance of broadband, Calvert County’s Department of Parks & Recreation recently announced that several of its community centers will now have free wifi.
According to the county’s newsletter:
The Department of Parks & Recreation announces that free Wi-Fi is now available at Mt. Hope, Harriet E. Brown, Northeast and Southern community centers.
Given the impact of telework and other connectivity concerns, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) prioritized access for citizens who may not have internet access at home.
This move by Calvert is the latest effort by Maryland’s counties to expand access to reliable broadband and use their parks departments in new innovative ways.
At the MACo Winter Conference, panelists will discuss both broadband expansion and the future of parks departments. During “Building Out Broadband, Building Up Maryland,” the discussion will focus on strategies, resources, and lessons learned by those at the community level working on broadband expansion. While “New Tech for Parks and Rec: Rebooting Public Spaces” will examine the future of parks in the twenty-first century and how technology can enhance the services offered by public spaces.
The 2021 MACo Winter Conference, “Time to Reboot: Tomorrow’s Tech Today,” will be held on December 8-10, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Hotel in Cambridge, Maryland.
