ew culinary traditions are more universally cherished than a humble pre-meal bread basket — but Asda has decided to take this a step further.
For one night only on October 19, the supermarket’s bakery is opening a pop-up restaurant in Aldgate, serving a 13-course all-bread menu.
Taking over Amber Restaurant, Asda are promising a two-and-a-half hour experience — free to attend — dubbed the Baker’s Dozen. To go, would-be diners will need to enter a ballot for tickets.
According to the supermarket, nearly a quarter of Brits say they have enjoyed bread baskets more than their main courses at restaurants, and more than half say they “can’t resist the temptation” of tucking into bread before a meal.
The night will even have a resident ‘doughmelier’ on hand to help with the tasting notes, provenance and pairing qualities of each bread course, and to offer a curated wine pairing for each dish.
Dishes served will include a slice of dark spelt and rye sourdough with chicken fat whipped butter, which promises a fine-dining twist on bread and butter, toast three ways and a brown bread ice cream.
The menu will be prepared and plated by Asda’s executive chef Jonathan Moore and his team, who are hosting the publicity stunt to celebrate the re-launch of Asda Bakery.
