Some of the career paths include software and web development, hardware and infrastructure, network technologies, information and cybersecurity, as well as executive jobs like IT management. The average US salaries for these jobs range from USD 44,000 to 67,000.
If you are unsure of which courses and certifications to take for your desired career, you can always refer to CompTIA’s IT certification roadmap on their roadmap, which covers alternative certifications from organizations like Microsoft and Cisco.
CompTIA certifications fall under three broad categories: Core Certifications, Infrastructure Certifications and Cybersecurity Certifications. Most of the courses offered are available at Udemy.
Core Certifications cover the foundational skills of those just stepping into the tech industry. If you are unsure of where to start, these courses may just be what you are looking for.
CompTIA IT Fundamentals is the most beginner-friendly. Firstly, it covers basic knowledge of hardware and software, networking, and security. Secondly, it is a useful tool in career progression and exploration for industry novices or those considering a mid-career change. Exam FC0-U61 must be passed for the student to be certified.
CompTIA A+ certification is widely considered a necessity for IT technicians seeking an entry-level course. It teaches foundational skills in network, security and troubleshooting. CompTIA A+ is useful in securing a job at service centres and help desks, or as a network technician. It is also an unofficial pre-requirement for more advanced certificates on security and networking offered by CompTIA or other organizations. In fact, CompTIA A+ certification is a requirement for household names like HP, Intel and Dell, and even the Department of Defense of the US.
CompTIA Network+ is an ideal follow-up to CompTIA A+. Having said that, there are students who jump straight to Network+ without completing CompTIA A+. Prospective students should have at least nine months of professional experience in networking. They should also be familiar with networking technologies like topologies and installation and configuration.  CompTIA Network+ is one of the certifications accepted by Apple, Dell, HP, and other household names.
CompTIA Security+ is the introductory course to cybersecurity. It covers skills like cryptography, identity management, access control, vulnerability management and more. It is slightly more advanced than the core certifications listed so far. It is recommended that students go through the CompTIA Network+ course and work with security in an IT administration for at least two years before taking this course.
Cybersecurity Certifications are suitable for experienced analysts, security designers, and professionals in vulnerability testing.
CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) serves as an intermediate between the CompTIA Security+ certification, which requires two years of professional experience, and the more advanced CASP+ certification. The CySA+ certification trains IT workers to become qualified information security analysts. It focuses on defensive strategies like threat detection and response It aims to plug the rapidly increasing manpower demand for such analysts.
CompTIA PenTest+ is an intermediate course that complements the aforementioned CySA+ with its focus on offensive skills like penetration testing. Students will be trained to deal with vulnerabilities in various kinds of networks. It is designed for professionals with at least two years of experience in information security, and who possess skills covered in the Network+ and Security+ courses.
CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner, shortened to CASP+, is equivalent to a masters-level certification. Like many of CompTIA’s certifications, it is an industry requirement for jobs in Verizon Connect, Network Solutions, and other established companies. It is targeted at seasoned professionals with experience in technical security for at least five years and IT administration for ten.
Like Cybersecurity Certifications, Infrastructure Certifications are for professionals in the field. The courses cover server support, hybrid cloud and network storage. Infrastructure Certifications are meant to complement the Network+ credential.
CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI certification is a more advanced course targeted at professionals with at least work experience in Linux administration and should already be familiar with skills such as GNU and Unix commands, scripting, and package management, among others. It is powered by LPI certification. The recommended prerequisites for this course are CompTIA Network+ and A+ certifications.
CompTIA Server+ is ideal for candidates with even more professional experience of 18 to 24 months in server hardware and software. The recommended prerequisite is the CompTIA A+ certification. The CompTIA Server+ certification is recognised by well-known brands like Microsoft, Intel, HP, and even the Department of Defense of the US.
CompTIA Cloud+ covers a range of knowledge on cloud technologies, including cloud markets, cloud-related system operations, hybrid cloud and multi-cloud technology. It is suitable for those who have worked in data administration, storage or networking for two to three years.
