BANGOR – The Maine Association of Football Officials, Bangor chapter, is once again in need of referees for the upcoming season.

The certification course is free to anyone interested, and consists of 10 classes held at the William S. Cohen School in Bangor, beginning Aug. 11.
“There’s five classes in the classroom and five classes on the field, so hands on. I focus strongly on the actual job of officiating–knowing your zones, knowing how to work with you teammates, your other officials on the field, how to communicate with them,” said Dan Campbell, instructor for the MAFO referee course.
Those who pass the test after completing all 10 courses will be eligible to referee games after Week 6 of the high school season, most likely starting at the youth level. Referee shortages aren’t new to this year, but Campbell said this season he wants to focus on the positives that come with the job.
“Game doesn’t go by, doesn’t matter the sport, I do multiple sports, where somebody doesn’t, as a I’m going off the field, thank me for it and appreciate, ‘hey great job,’” Campbell said. “Getting into the parking lot I hear the positive comments and to be honest with you, I’m hearing that more and more.”
To register for the classes, or hear more about the opportunity, you can contact Dan Campbell at [email protected]
