The DeKalb County Parks and Recreation department will soon host free introductory classes to teach local youth about two different sports.
On Sept. 10, DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will partner with Netball America to host a kick-off registration event from 2 to 5 p.m. at Redan Recreation Center, 1839 Phillips Road in Lithonia.
The event will include a free netball demonstration and lunch for participants ages 9 to 18. Participants will also be able to register for a free 10-week program that is set to begin on Sept. 13. The program will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Redan Recreation Center and Mondays and Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Midway Recreational Center located at 3181 Midway Road in Decatur. “Participants will learn the skills of the globally popular sport of netball and enhance athletic fundamentals while participating in fun leadership and empowerment activities,” states a press release.
On Netball America’s website, the sport is described as, “similar to basketball although the rules, equipment and team numbers are different. For example, in Netball, there is no dribbling, no running with the ball, and players are designated to certain areas. Netball has similarities to European handball, and Ultimate Frisbee.”
“Netball is a true team sport that teaches great hand/eye coordination and spatial awareness,” states the website.
On Sept. 17, DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will host a “Gateway to Fishing” program from 8 a.m. to noon at Chapel Hill Park located at 3985 LeHigh Boulevard in Decatur. The event will take place at the fishing pond.
The free event will teach fishing in metro and suburban parks and other public waters that are accessible to DeKalb County residents, according to a press release.
“The Georgia Department of Natural Resources strives to partner and host youth fishing classes and improve accessibility for communities to enjoy,” stated officials. “The event will also include a display of wildlife and a mobile catch center that will provide fishing equipment and supplies for participants. The mobile trailer will serve constituents and recruit anglers in the Atlanta-metro and beyond.”
Youth ages 5 to 17 are encouraged to participate; attendees younger than 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult, according to a press release. Attendees are asked to bring water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen.
