ANN ARBOR, MI — Registration is underway for the Ann Arbor YMCA’s free annual Safety Around Water classes in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.
Instruction focuses on teaching stroke development, as well as beach, pool, waterpark and boating safety tips.
Classes in Ann Arbor, for children age 3-12, take place from June 20-24 at the Y’s Downtown Membership Branch, 400 West Washington St. Classes in Ypsilanti, for children age 5-12, take place at several McKinley Properties across Washtenaw County, including Eastern Michigan University, Golfside Lake Apartments, Roundtree Apartments Schooner Apartments, from July to August.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that pool and spa drowning deaths among American children were on the rise in 2021. Toni Kayumi, Ann Arbor Y president/CEO, said that COVID-19-related restrictions in the last two years also may mean fewer kids have gotten the swim lessons they need to stay safe.
The Y’s Safety Around Water program can help them get those lessons, Kayumi said.
“Through our Safety Around Water program, the Y is committed to help reduce water-related injuries and deaths, especially in communities where our kids are most at risk,” Kayumi said in a statement.
Contributions from McKinley Properties and the Dick Beedon Memorial Fund are helping make this year’s free lessons possible. Registration information and additional details, including dates, times and locations, can be found at www.annarborymca.org/saw.
