A brief description

The term MICROBIOLOGY accurately defines the discipline’s focus: the study of small living organisms. MICRO means small, BIO means living, and LOGY means study. Microbiology (or, more precisely, bacteriology) is a relatively new discipline with many unknowns.

Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Delft cloth merchant, is considered the founder of microbiology. He discovered the invisible world of microorganisms using home-made microscopes.

Fanny Hesse, credited as the “Mother of Microbiology,” is best known for cultivating agar for cell culture. Her birthday would have been today.

Microbiologists must first understand how microbes function in order to overcome problems posed by them or to take advantage of their abilities. They will also apply this expertise to disease prevention and treatment, the development of emerging technology, and the overall improvement of our lives. Microbiologists are crucial in the treatment of diseases.
