Let’s not shy away from the fact that, each & every commerce student has once thought of becoming a Chartered Accountant or in short a CA.
Many of you just had a thought of becoming a CA, but some of you have a dream of becoming a CA ever since you choose the commerce stream in your 10+2.
And why not!
Chartered Accountants are one of the most Important, Respected & Highly Paid individuals in our country. In fact, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) which regulates the profession of chartered accountancy in India, is the 2nd largest professional Accounting & Finance body in the world.
Chartered Accountancy involves the management of financial accounts, auditing, budgeting, taxation, and various other undertakings related to accounting.
A certified accounting professional who is qualified to take care of and manage accounting-related matters such as filing tax returns, auditing financial statements, preparing & reviewing financial documents, managing business accounts, etc., is known as a Chartered Accountant (CA).
A Chartered Accountant (CA) can also provide financial advice and money management strategies to an individual or business.
They are eligible to work in various sectors of the economy, be it Private or Public.
Many 10+2 students pursue commerce stream without Maths as a subject, instead, they choose any other optional subject as per their choice.
But does this limit your chances of becoming a Chartered Accountant?
So let’s check this infographic, what all you need to know to become a CA after 12th commerce without maths.
The answer is NO, Students pursuing or who have completed their 10+2 in commerce or any other stream without Maths as a subject are somewhat equally eligible to pursue Chartered Accountancy.
However, it will be quite tough for non-maths students to pursue the initial stages of the Chartered Accountancy course as compared to the students with maths.
But later on, the journey becomes equally challenging for both sides!
To be brutally honest, becoming a Chartered Accountant is not a piece of cake. It takes a lot of dedication, determination, patience & hard work to become one.
But once you have successfully managed to become a CA, all your hard work and dedication pay off in the form of a bright career, handsome salary, and most importantly respect from society.
The entire world runs on money, and managing finances is one of the trickiest things out there. Hence, accounting professionals like CAs are always on high demand among various organizations, irrespective of industry or sector.
Do you know, as of April 2018 there were only 2.82 lakh CAs in India, out of which only 1.25 lakh were working full-time. Which means that, only approx. 44% of the total CAs were actively working in the country.
Considering the fact that India has 6.8 crore Tax Payers which is increasing with much new business establishing every year, the current availability of CAs is totally insufficient.
So, what does that mean?
It’s simple, the employment opportunities for Accounting Professionals like CAs are more than ever.
To become a CA after 12th Commerce without Maths, it is required to complete the training designed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
ICAI is the statutory body that regulates the profession of Chartered Accountancy in India. First established on 1st July 1949, ICAI is the only licensing cum regulating body of the financial audit and accountancy profession in India.
The ICAI offers three-level course and conduct exams accordingly, allowing aspirants to get certified as a Chartered Accountant.
There are a series of courses and training programs followed by examinations at various levels for aspirants to become Chartered Accountants, and only eligible candidates can pursue them.
Intermediate Aspirants: Must have completed 10+2 (XII) standard from a Government Recognized Board.
Graduateost Graduate Aspirants: Must have completed Graduation or Post Graduation in Commerce with a minimum score of 55 % from a Government Recognized University.
For non-commerce Graduates & Post Graduates, the minimum score requirement is 60%
Intermediate level passed aspirants from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) are also eligible.
There are two ways to approach the Chartered Accountancy course. You can either start your journey of becoming a Chartered Accountant right away after completing your 10+2 standard, Or first, complete your Graduation Post Graduation and then start.
Both ways are almost identical, but having a graduationost-graduation degree will let you skip few steps that are mandatory if you are starting out just after your 12th standard.
Now, let’s discuss the two ways you can start your journey with.
This route is specifically for aspirants, applying for the CA course directly after completing their 10+2 standard. Here are the steps you need to follow.

Are few of the many sectors, who are always seeking out for skilled Chartered Accountants to manage their finances & accounts.
CAs always have the freedom to either work for a business or an organization and help manage their finances, auditing, taxation and more in both Private & Public Sectors.
CAs can also work individually and can run their own Chartered Accountancy firm & consultancy and offer their services to those who seek it.
There are multiple ways you can approach your professional career after becoming a CA, it’s just a matter of choice to select what suits you the most.
India is already on a deficit when it comes to the number of Chartered Accountants working actively in our country. With that being said, India has a huge number of job opportunities for skilled Chartered Accountants.
Financial Accounting: Manage financial accounts, Prepare & maintain financial documents/invoices, Run internal audits, Manage taxation.
Tax Management: Review tax situation, Advice on tax planning, tax reporting.
Cost Management Budgeting, Expenditure Control, Cost forecasting, Cost saving strategies.
Auditing: Perform Internal financial audits as per Company Act, Review & Fix errors found while auditing.
Consultancy: Provide advice on financial matters, business expansion, profits, project planning, and more.
The average salary of a Chartered Accountant in India ranges from INR 5,00,000 – 8,00,000 LPA. But like any other profession, the salary varies and increases with time and experience.
1 – 4 years experience – INR 3,00,000 – 11,00,000 LPA
5 – 10 – INR 5,00,000 – 20,00,000 LPA
10 – 19 – INR 7,00,000 – 28,00,000 LPA
Chartered Accountancy is considered as one of the toughest professions out there and It takes a lot of dedication and some very important skills to succeed in the same.
This is completely fine as nobody is perfect, the ability to accept your failures and fix them is the most important skill you must possess.
Analytical Ability: CA needs to perform various tasks based on multiple calculations, arithmetic, data, reports, etc.
It requires a good analytical mindset to work on such complex subjects. Having an analytical mindset also improves your analytical skills.
Communication Skill: Getting your message across is equally important as gaining information.
As a CA you will be interacting with various clients, peers, stakeholders and it’s very crucial for a CA to convey his or her thoughts and advice effectively.
Patience: The journey to becoming a CA takes years to fulfill, 5 years to be precise, but sometimes it takes more than that as not everyone learns & achieves at the same pace.
Hence, it is important to have patience if you wish to pursue this profession.
Self-Motivation: Chartered Accountancy is a dynamic profession, which means that you need to keep educating yourself according to the most current financial advancements on a regular basis.
Nobody, but you will be responsible for your own skillset, and this constant learning requires self-motivation.
Ability to Accept Failures: Pursuing one of the most difficult professions is not easy; despite your constant efforts you will find yourself struggling in various stages of this journey.
Becoming a Chartered Accountant is not an easy feat, and certainly not an easy journey. Chartered Accountants are amongst the most respected individuals in society, not because of their higher salary or status, it’s because not everybody manages to become one.
