ISRO is currently accepting applications for three new free online courses on Geographical Information System, Geocomputation, and Geoweb services. The courses will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a unit under the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). IIRS is a premier training and educational institute set-up for developing trained professionals in the field of Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GNSS Technology for natural resources, environmental and disaster management.
The courses can be taken by undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in any year, technical or scientific staff of central or state government, and faculty and researchers working at universities or institutions. To participate in the program the interested organizations, universities, departments, or Institutes have to identify a coordinator at their end who will be responsible for registering their organization as the nodal center on the IIRS website as well as approve participants from their institute.
At present, there are three online courses of 7 to 12 days each, and participants can register for an individual course of their choice or all the available courses. The program is being sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organization, Department of Space, Government of India. The details of the courses are as follows:
Geographical Information System: The course will be conducted from 28 September to 15 October 2020. The concepts that will be taught in the course are introduction to GIS, geographic phenomena, concepts and examples, data inputting and editing in GIS, spatial analysis – introductory concepts and overview, and so on.
Remote Sensing and GIS Applications: The course will be conducted from 2 to 20 November 2020. The concepts that will be taught in the course are applications of remote sensing and other geospatial technologies in natural resources management, development and governance, remote sensing and GIS applications for crop resource assessment and monitoring, remote sensing applications for geological studies, space-enabled products and services for disaster management: Indian initiatives, and so on.
Basics of Geocomputation and Geoweb Services: Introduction to Geocomputation – technology and applications, introduction to online GIS and geo-web services, open geodata repositories and ISRO geoweb services for thematic applications, programming concepts for geo-computation, introduction to Python and R, and so on.
Participants will also be given a certificate from ISRO based on 70% attendance and 40% marks in the online examination. Students will be given access to study materials like lecture slides, video-recorded lectures, open-source software and handouts of demonstrations, and others through e-class platform of IIRS.
