Kanye West has agreed to buy Parler, a relatively small forum that calls itself a free-speech alternative to Twitter. Here he attends Paris Fashion Week early this year.
It used to be that newspapers were the must-have baubles for wealthy ideologues. Now, social media platforms are becoming the trophy asset of choice for powerful individuals who want to push an anything-goes view on free speech, especially if they’re been burned by the rules on more established sites. Kanye West is the latest to throw his hat in the ring to become a platform proprietor, pushing for the “right to freely express ourselves.”
The musician and apparel tycoon also known as Ye has agreed to buy Parler, a relatively small forum that calls itself a free-speech alternative to Twitter, according to a recent announcement from the firm. Parler is a right-wing network that Apple and Google temporarily kicked off their app stores following reports that it was used to plan the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial, we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” Ye said in a press release announcing the deal. About a week before, the rapper was suspended from Twitter and Instagram for anti-Semitic posts, including a tweet that he was going to go “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.”
He joins a motley crew of volatile plutocrats who want to host their own free speech playgrounds, where users can post extremist viewpoints, conspiracy theories and more. Elon Musk is on course to wrangle Twitter Inc., and Donald Trump — who was also banned from Twitter and Facebook for inciting violence — has built the platform Truth Social.
Nothing is straightforward about any of these deals.
For a start, we don’t know how much Ye agreed to pay for Parler, or if he has managed to pull together adequate funding for an acquisition. Parlement Technologies, which owns Parler, said that it had “entered into an agreement in principle” with Ye and didn’t disclose financial terms. Neither the company nor Ye responded to questions about the deal.
Musk’s Twitter acquisition is hardly a done deal either, and Truth Social’s funding via a blank check company, which was created to take it public for about $1 billion, has also been beset by delays.
If all three deals get completed, the internet might just enter uncharted territory with a trio of platforms controlled by capricious billionaires and a seemingly unhinged celebrity. But maybe not. This evolution isn’t quite so unusual when you consider that for more than a century, traditional media has been steered by powerful proprietors, from Rupert Murdoch to Ted Turner, with a range of crackpot owners in between.
Henry Ford, for instance, owned the notorious Dearborn Independent weekly newspaper from 1919 to 1927, which he used to promote shockingly anti-Semitic views, with articles claiming that a vast Jewish conspiracy was infecting the U.S. and that Jews were bent on corrupting the world through wars and the stock market. The paper had a circulation of about 500,000 and was distributed throughout the U.S. via Ford’s network of car dealerships.
In the U.K., aristocratic brothers Alfred and Harold Harmsworth started the Daily Mail newspaper in 1896, to publicly cheer for British imperialism, as well as the rise of fascism in Europe and in Germany in the 1930s.
Though today’s social media proprietors are focusing on free speech, they may eventually come to echo their 20th century predecessors by pushing an agenda with their platforms. It won’t be as simple as printing a punchy editorial in a newspaper, but there are still levers these owners can pull to amplify a message directly from their profiles or from their supporters.
For Trump, that goal is likely to try and get himself elected again, while for Musk that might mean promoting his own companies via Twitter. Kanye’s crude and bizarre statements about race have been all over the place, so it’s unclear what ideas he may try to promote through Parler. The site has about 16 million registered users, a spokesman for Parler tells me. On Truth Social, Donald Trump has just over 4 million followers.
These figures are tiny next to Twitter, which has more than 230 million active users, and Facebook which has almost 3 billion. But wealthy proprietors who dabble at the fringes could still cause trouble, particularly if they allow conspiracy theories as crazy as QAnon to flourish. That would do tremendous damage.

India’s official position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine is notoriously hard to pin down. Within the last two weeks alone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly reproved Russian President Vladimir Putin, telling him that “this is not the era for war.” But then India, as a member of the U.N. Security Council, abstained on a vote condemning Moscow’s “annexation” of Ukrainian territory. To …

Social Security is known as the third rail of politics. President Joe Biden has pounced on all who dare even think about curtailing the retirement program. In fact, this week cash-strapped retirees will get the biggest cost-of-living increase in 40 years, an 8.7% boost to protect them from inflation. For many retirees on fixed incomes, that’s a godsend. Some Republicans are considering …

Jurors recently handed down their decision in the sentencing trial of Nikolas Cruz, the man who murdered 17 people, mostly children, in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018 in Parkland, Florida. They opted against the death penalty, choosing instead to give Cruz life in prison without parole. The three jurors who voted against the death penalty did so based on “mitigating …

European governments are facing a choice of which kind of crisis to have: an energy crisis or a fiscal crisis. The global economy may hang in the balance. Estimates of the size of the energy price shock vary, but one plausible assessment runs in the range of 6% to 8% of GDP for Europe. One response to this shock would be to let energy prices rise and allow the private sector to adjust. This …

Many people in the U.S. may now be thinking that they’ve received a blessed reprieve from a middle age rite of passage: the colonoscopy. After all, a large study just made headlines for suggesting the procedure isn’t nearly as effective at lowering the risk of colon cancer as previously thought. Worse, it didn’t seem to have any impact on lowering the risk of dying from the disease. But no one …

Meteorologists can predict hurricanes as soon as they’re born and gauge their size, speed and time of arrival with increasing accuracy — though ascertaining their precise route remains a work in progress. But science’s limits, and the manner in which information is disseminated by television networks and other media, often place the lives of those they serve in greater jeopardy. My conclusion …

Although the matter is reportedly still up in the air, I’m hoping the Supreme Court releases its report on the investigation of a draft opinion in last spring’s abortion case. But I doubt we’ll learn the identity of the leaker. We never do. I consider the leak contemptible, but we mustn’t be starry-eyed. The court has leaked for most of its existence. At times there have only been hints, such …

If you’re like most people, you probably only think about energy when filling up your car or paying a hefty electric bill. You probably don’t know that, since 1992, October has been designated “Energy Awareness Month.” This October, we have several compelling reasons to think about the energy we depend on. For one, a global pandemic and the war in Ukraine have sent costs soaring. And climate …
