It’s Daniel Jones’ world and we’re just living in it.
The Giants quarterback is the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after leading New York to a 23-17 win Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the victory, Jones and the Giants improved to 6-1 for the first time since 2008.
With each win, Jones’ price tag continues to climb. Ahead of the 2022 season, New York opted against using its fifth-year option on Jones, which means he could be a free agent this winter.

That’s where Pro Football Focus enters the picture. The analytics website says the Giants will have the following options with Jones, if they want to retain his services and cannot agree on a long-term contract:
– The exclusive franchise tag, which will cost a projected $45.5 million.
– The non-exclusive franchise tag, which is projected to cost around $31.5 million.
However PFF believes the Giants will choose door No. 3:
A league source we spoke to believed the Giants’ best course of action would be to apply the transition tag – projected to cost around $28 million.
But that comes with two warnings.
It would allow another team to sign Jones away without any trade compensation.
If the Giants use a franchise or transition tag on Jones, then they can’t use one on running back Saquon Barkley, who also would be a free agent.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes the transition tag makes sense for Jones and the Giants.
I’m not sure there’s another team in the league that’d be a threat to sign Jones to a contract that’s better than the Giants would be willing to give him. The transition tag could be a good short-term compromise if the Giants come out of this season high enough on Jones to give him another shot but not quite convinced enough to sign him long term.

On Sunday, Jones set career highs with 11 rushing attempts for 107 yards. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jones’ 107 yards are the fourth-highest total by a quarterback in Giants history and the most for a player at that position in 76 years. Harry Newman ran for 114 yards vs. Green Bay on Nov. 11, 1934 and 108 yards at Boston on Oct. 8, 1933. Frank Filchock also had 108 rushing yards, on Oct. 6, 1946, at Pittsburgh.
Barkley led the Giants with 110 rushing yards on 24 carries. Barkley and Jones became the third tandem of rushers to each top 100 rushing yards in a game in Giants history. This is the first time a quarterback has been one of the players. On Dec. 23, 2007, Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 151 yards and Brandon Jacobs added 143 in a victory in Buffalo. The same duo each passed the century mark on Dec. 13, 2010, when Bradshaw ran for 116 yards and Jacobs 103 in a victory over Minnesota (that was played in Detroit).
