The November Not-So-New Faculty Lunch Discussion is being held from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, and from noon to 1:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence (CORD), room 349. Join the Teaching and Faculty Support Center with speakers Brian Hurley, Graduation and Retention, and Kelly Sullivan, Industrial Engineering, as they talk about "Best Practices in Developing and Managing Homework."
Homework … What's the point? How do we connect it to learning objectives, lectures and exams? How do we manage it in the face of large classes and academic integrity issues? Not-so-new faculty can join the Wally Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center for a free lunch and an opportunity to help us answer these questions. Hurley (assistant director for Academic Engagement, Student Success) and Sullivan (associate professor, Industrial Engineering) will present their thoughts on and approaches to homework.
Hurley has extensive experience trying to get students to do homework. As a teacher, parent, adviser, academic program developer and student, he has worked with students and instructors on strategies to most effectively support their in-class time with out-of-class work. His current role as assistant director for academic engagement in the Office of Student Success has provided him with new insights and perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for homework in college courses that he is excited to share.
Sullivan is excited to share homework strategies he has used to build technical skills in a variety of courses, including required courses in mathematical optimization in both the industrial engineering and data science B.S. programs. He is a Teaching Academy Fellow and recipient of the 2020 Rising Teacher Award in the College of Engineering.

The Wally Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center provides six lunch programs for not-so-new faculty each academic year. These programs are available for all faculty (tenure track and non-tenure track) who have teaching responsibilities.
