Costumed rangers conduct a variety of daily program offerings that vary from day to day at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, 10 miles west of Altoona, off the Gallitzin exit of U.S. Highway 22. The programs are offered now through Sept. 30, and are generally held between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and from 2-4 p.m. The programs are weather and staff dependent. Join a Park Ranger for a guided walk through the ruins of the South Fork Dam, daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., now through Sept. 30. This interpretive walk will last approximately 45 minutes and will take participants to the bottom of the dam, through the breach and back out on the other side. The meeting location is on the South Abutment. Participants will learn about May 31, 1889, the hillside across from the dam, and much more. The last portion of the walk contains a steep section with stairs. The walk is approximately 1/3 mile. Participants are encouraged to wear proper shoes and bring water. The Lincoln Highway Experience’s annual Lincoln Highway SupperMarket is returning to the Route 30-based museum this summer for its ninth year. The popular weekly open-air food festival will take place on 13 Wednesdays until Aug. 24, 5-8 p.m., weather permitting, at the Lincoln Highway Experience’s grounds at 3435 Route 30 East in Latrobe. Guests can enjoy breezy summer evenings on the spacious lawn with great food from local chefs, BYOB, and live music. There is a charge per car for admission. Additional cost for food purchased from chefs’ booths. Tables are limited, so it is suggested that attendees also bring chairs or blankets, especially if you will be arriving late. No outside food or pets are permitted. The 2022 participating local chefs are Aroma Italiano, Chef Dato’s Table, Connections Café, Grateful Smoke BBQ and Simply Good. The 42nd annual free summer concert series, Concerts-on-the-Green, is underway at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County. The concerts are held on the grounds at 7 p.m. and run roughly to 8 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning June 23 through Aug. 18. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to listen to these concerts which take place on the new Amphitheatre in front of the M. Josephine Paul Family Museum. July 6: Civic Band; July 13: Civic Band. St. Benedict Church in the Geistown section of Johnstown’s return of the annual parish reunion on July 8, 9 and 10.  After a two year hiatus, the church is celebrating the “Welcome Back” 87th reunion this year with a full slate of entertainment, food, games, children’s area, basket raffle, bingo, flea market, and many more activities for the entire family. The festival is on the church grounds at 2310 Bedford St., Johnstown. Admission and parking are free. There will also be a free shuttle bus service from Geistown fire hall.

The Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Cornhole Tournament July 9, at the Shanksville Community Grove along Main Street in Shanksville. Burgers, hot dogs, fresh-cut fries and beverages will be available at the grove kitchen beginning at 11 a.m. Registration ends at 12:30 p.m. and bags fly at 1 p.m. 50/50 payout. A free community dinner, served at the Windber Area Community Kitchen, will be held from 4-6 p.m. July 9, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave., Windber. The menu will be pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, fruit, bread and dessert. The meal will be served and sponsored by Davidsville Community Church. The Windber Area Community Kitchen (W.A.C.K.) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.
The Meyersdale Salisbury Berlin Relay For Life is 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 9, at the Salisbury-Elk Lick High School baseball field. Events include entertainment, food trucks, face painting, music by Country Express, cake auction, luminary service and fireworks. Survivor dinner at 6 p.m. in the Salisbury Borough Building. Cancer survivors are invited to bring one guest or caregiver with them to the dinner. Menu is spaghetti, meatballs and meat sauce, salad, dressing, roll, dessert and drink.
Movies night is back during the summer at Keystone State Park. The park will be playing a variety of movies at the beach house. The movies will be shown on a projector screen outside on the lawn. So grab your blankets, chairs and make sure you dress for the weather. The times for the movies are at 8:30 p.m., depending on when it gets dark. Movies will not be shown in inclement weather. A reunion of related descendants of Philip Burbach/Poorbaugh, (Ca 1750-1812), will be held July 10, at the Mt. Olivet Church grove in Northampton Township, 9 miles south of Berlin, off LR2020. This is a continuation of the Poorbaugh/Purbaugh/ Burbach reunion which held its 66th reunion in 2019. The first reunion of the association was in 1952. Arcadia Theater presents Missoula Children’s Theatre Coal-ala-Bear series for children, Rumpelstiltskin July 11-16. The Grand Halle on Broad Street, Johnstown, will feature The Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh in Concert at the fourth and final performance of the 2022-2023 Grand Halle Chamber Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. July 14. The Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh are a wind quintet featuring music on flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. The NRA will sponsor a “Woman on Target” shooting clinic designed to teach new female shooters and gun owners about firearms safety, properly handling techniques, how to shoot and what to consider when purchasing their first or next firearm. Ligonier Valley Historical Society July Living History Weekend, “Laughlintown in the War of 1812.” Step back in time on the historic grounds of Compass Inn Museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 16 and 17, to see what was happening in Laughlintown during the War of 1812. Interact with the men and women of the Maryland-based Ship’s Company, a reenactment unit that portrays the naval contractor system used to supply the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812, highlighting the roles of early American businesswomen, tailors, seamstresses, sailmakers, brewers, millers, and others who lived during the early 1800s. The Living History Weekend also includes tours of the historic Compass Inn and outbuildings, as well as cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations, at no extra charge.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, from 7-10 p.m. July 16, dance the night away in Laughlintown at “A Midsummer Night’s Ball” at Compass Inn Museum. “Midsummer Night’s Ball” will feature local dancing master, Brett Walker, and period music by The Wayward Companions. Laurel Highlands Education and Robotic’s third annual Drone Camps provide two hours of drone activities geared for both beginners and experienced flyers. As a bonus, students will hear about LHER’s robotics programs and have the opportunity to drive robots built by local high school students. Jackie’s Garden Works Concert Series invites music lovers of all ages to enjoy live performances, food and drinks in one of Johnstown’s unique venues. Kiwanis Club of Somerset Basket Raffle 10 a.m. July 23. Drawing will begin at 2:30 p.m., at Somerset Trust lower lot during Chalk the Block. Tickets will be sold at the event. Need not be present to win.
The Jerome Junior Rifle Team (JJRT) will host its first ever “Outdoor 3-Position (3-P) 50 yard .22 caliber small-bore rifle competition.” The competition, which will include an indoor air-rifle match with .177 caliber rifles, will be conducted at the Jerome Sportsmen’s Association (JSA) facilities, 3220 Jerome Hill Road, Hollsopple. It starts from noon through 4 p.m. July 29, and starting at 8 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. both days, July, 30-31.
Pre-registeration is encouraged. There will be a chicken and burger barbecue and other food, snacks and drinks available for sale, proceeds to benefit the JJRT. The competition is sanctioned by NRA Shooting Sports. Awards will be given in the men’s and women’s divisions for the “Top Three” in each category.
In addition, a special “Youth BB Gun Competition,” for children 8 to 13 years of age, will be held on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Jerome Jr. BB Gun team are scheduled to compete at the Indoor Range and any individuals, or BB Gun teams, are also invited to register for this special youth match. The Daisy model 499 Target Rifle is required and non-members must provide their own rifles. The “Top Shots” of the BB Gun Match will also receive awards.
All 3-P and BB Gun competitors must preregister for the “JSA Open” by July, 25. Tickets are still available at any county Senior Community Center or at the Area Agency on Aging services complex, 1338 South Edgewood Ave., Somerset, for the annual Senior Picnic, hosted by the Area Agency on Aging of Somerset County. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29, at the Somerset County Fairgrounds, 7842 Mount Davis Road, Meyersdale. Lunch is served at noon. Tickets may be purchased at any Senior Community Service Center or at the Area Agency on Aging office at 1338 S. Edgewood Ave., Somerset. For more information, call 814-443-2681. On the menu is hamburger on bun, two chicken strips, mac n’ cheese and watermelon. Musical entertainment will be provided by local group The Krazy Kat Daddies. There will also be a car show. Registration is now open for the “Hyatt’s Angels” 9th annual 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk, 9 a.m. Sept. 10, in Jennerstown.  Set at Pine Springs Camp, the landscape is a 3.1 mile out and back course that weaves through the countryside.  The course includes “Hyatt’s Hill” right after the half-way point. The chip-timed 5K includes online registration here  https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Jennerstown/HyattsRunWithTheAngelsSomersetcounty
Packet pick-up and same day registrations will be offered at an available.
