PETALING JAYA: Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has called for a moratorium on all development proposals in her constituency, including the proposed MRT3 project, unless the authorities immediately improve flood mitigation measures.
Stating that 10 locations in her area were flooded after the heavy rain in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, Yeoh noted how floodwaters carrying thick mud swept into homes and destroyed the residents’ belongings.
This comes after her constituency was also affected by severe flooding during the record rainfall which hit Peninsular Malaysia in December.
“Until and unless the federal government and their agencies, including Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), employ a sense of urgency in the way they treat this matter, I want to see a moratorium slapped on all development proposals in the Segambut constituency surrounding the 10 flooded locations for the rest of this year,” she said in a statement.
“Since the last flood in December, we have pressured the authorities to preserve all retention ponds in Kuala Lumpur and urgently implement measures to protect residents from recurrence of flash floods, including river maintenance, the installation of sirens in multiple languages, and notification via SMS messages (sent by) the National Security Council (MKN).
“However, four months later, all these suggestions have been found wanting and slow in implementation.”
She was commenting on a report today in which federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had instructed DBKL to use its existing resources to overcome floods in the capital.
Yeoh also highlighted a statement by irrigation and drainage department director-general Nasir Noh that the flood system control infrastructure in the city was operating in accordance with SOPs.
“All responses so far by the authorities have merely mentioned using existing SOPs and resources to fight this extraordinary rainfall pattern,” said Yeoh.
“Queries were met with standard responses – ‘pending drawing up of design, pending appointment of contractors or employing existing frequency in cleaning and maintenance works’.
“Doing the same thing (and) expecting different results is an act of sorcery.”
