Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez has highlighted concerns about the Pakistan Cricket Board’s appointment procedure, as well as the move to downsize domestic cricket teams.
Hafeez also lamented the elimination of the departmental and bank teams in domestic cricket, claiming that it had left many local players jobless and without a future.
On the orders of Prime Minister Imran Khan, who himself played a lot of domestic cricket for the national airlines and other departments, the PCB terminated the role of departmental and bank teams two years ago.
Meanwhile, Hafeez’s spectacular international career, which spanned 18 years, came to an end earlier this month. While Hafeez retired from Test cricket in December 2018, he played his final ODI in the 2019 World Cup.
Even as he neared the end of his career, he continued to perform effectively in T20Is. Hafeez made his final appearance in national colors at the T20 World Cup in 2021. He has played in 55 Tests, 218 One-Day Internationals, and 119 Twenty20 Internationals.
Hafeez, who just announced his retirement from all international cricket, has raised concerns over the PCB chairman appointment process.
He said it was past time for actual elections to be held to elect the Chairman of the Board, rather than him being essentially a chosen nominee of the patron in chief, the Prime Minister.
“The current process is incorrect since the chairman of the PCB is currently elected through a selection mechanism. Moreover, the procedure for selecting the PCB chairman is incorrect.”
“The chairman PCB comes on political grounds and the chairman who comes politically does not understand cricket at all,” he said.
He proposed that the cricket board’s chairman be elected through elections. Ramiz Raja, a former Pakistan captain, is the current PCB chairman.
“I represented Pakistan with great pride, and whatever I have played throughout my 18 years, I played with dignity. And whether it’s on the field or off the field, I tried to raise Pakistan’s flag high. I am very happy and satisfied with my career and achievements, which were all for Pakistan. So this is it for me”, said Hafeez.
