Some didn’t mind the price increase but besieged DStv to improve its services and make the increment worthwhile, giving them value for money paid.
“@DStvNg please make it worth the pay, please. Stop repeating old and boring movies!!!!”
Another user emphasised: “It is time for us to pay as we watch. No light, no fuel….. how do we get the value of the new increment?”
Speaking on behalf of movie lovers, a user further noted the alternatives, despite the hike in prices of goods and services across the country, available for the same entertainment given by Dstv and Govt: “Now that things are super expensive, they increased their subscription package. Have they forgotten people have access to Netflix and can watch the fastest movies there? They need small guidance…lol”
A user also encouraged Nigerians to focus on the Nigerian-owned decoder, TSTV: “MultiChoice, owners of DSTV and GOTV, increases tariff. This is the best time to get Nigerian-owned TSTV decoders and pay as low as 2 Naira per station. A subscription of N1000 can last you 4 months with multiple channels. I watched the Real Madrid vs Barcelona Elclasico there.”
Although some individuals say the Nigerian-owned decider could still increase its prices later on, others agree with taking it up as an alternative.
Effective from Friday, April 1, 2022, MultiChoice announced the price changes yesterday. Compared to the old prices — Premium N18, 400; Compact+ N12,400; Compact N7,900, Confam N4,615, Yanga N2,565 and Padi N1,850, the new prices for DStv are as follows: Premium, N21,000, Compact+ N14,250, Compact, N9,000, Confam, N5,300, Yanga N2,950 Padi N2,150 Business N2,669, Xtraview + PVR access fee N2,900.
For Gotv, the new prices were fixed at — GOtv Max, N4,150, GOtv Jolli N2,800, GOtv Jinja, N1,900. GOtv Lite N900.
In 2020, MultiChoice increased its tariffs twice within a space of three months, increasing the package-by-package tariffs by 13.6%, 13.3% and 9.8%. Although the management had blamed the new price regime on Federal Government’s 2.5 per cent increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) from five to 7.5 per cent, reasons were not provided for the second proposed increase back then.
Regarding this, a user stated on Twitter: “If you got the same message I got from @DStvNg, please do not keep quiet. Nigeria is their biggest market, and yet South Africa enjoys.”
Barely a year later, MultiChoice Ghana, Malawi, and Tanzania also had a tariff increase all effective from September 1, 2021. The increase seems to be an annual event now, having raised its subscriptions by an average of 31% in five years.
MultiChoice Nigeria affirms that this is to enable its continuous value provision for its customers in the face of the rising cost of inflation and business operations.
To make things easier for users, MultiChoice Nigeria has stated that customers who pay on or before their due date, which is before April 1, 2022, will be eligible to pay the old price; If they pay consistently on time before their due dates, for a period of 12 months, they will pay the old price. Customers who pay for 10 months upfront on the new price will get the 11th and 12th months free.
