STARKVILLE — Starkville Area Arts Council recently announced Art in the Park is back after a two-year hiatus.
The seventh annual Art in the Park will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30, at J.L. King Park in Starkville. This free children’s “art festival” is a hands-on event designed to inspire and promote creativity in young people.
Art activities are planned for kids to enjoy, with various local community and civic groups supporting this annual event. Many local artists serve as demonstrators and instructors, where youth are allowed to create art they can take home. Hands-on musical experiences may include drums and string instruments. The ever-popular, temporary mural wall will be on-site for families to paint.
This year, snacks will be provided for free to attendees between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. while supplies last. Adults must accompany the children in attendance.

National Academy of Inventors chapter now at MSU
STARKVILLE — The National Academy of Inventors announces its newest chapter at Mississippi State University.
A nonprofit created to support aspiring inventors in academics, NAI has 4,000 members in more than 250 institutions around the world. Founded in 2010, the NAI educates and mentors innovative students and enhances the visibility of academic technology and innovation. The academy also encourages the disclosure of intellectual property, recognizes and encourages inventors with patents issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and translates the inventions of its members to benefit society.
MSU’s chapter has been created in collaboration with the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering, its Department of Mechanical Engineering and the iDEELab, an educational resource for engineering students.
Theatre MSU hosts actor-in-residence
STARKVILLE — Mississippi State’s Theatre MSU is hosting former student and Shakespearean and commedia clown actor Jarrod Bates on campus Monday through Friday for a week of performances, acting lessons and lectures as actor-in-residence.
Bates will present a hybrid lecture/comedy show — “Shaking Up Shakespeare: a comedic, radically irreverent resuscitation of the bard” — on Wednesday at 5 p.m. on McComas Hall’s main stage. The event is free and open to the public.
In addition, the actor will conduct a masterclass workshop for aspiring comedy actors, coach the LabRats Comedy group and provide private coaching for graduate auditions, as well as give guest lectures in some theater classes.
Bates has made appearances with Cirque du Soleil and Bryant Park Shakespeare, among others. He is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and was an apprentice under master clown teacher Christopher Bayes at the Funny School of Good Acting, both in New York City, and Yale School of Drama.
