India is expected to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence by 2023, according to a recent report from Project Management Institute (PMI), a Philadelphia-based non-profit organisation. Last year, the Indian government allocated $477 million to boost the country’s AI ecosystem. Further, as part of the National Education Policy (NEP), AI will be introduced in school curriculums. Inarguably, India is making bottom-up changes to become an AI superpower.
Below, we take a look at the latest AI courses offered by Indian institutions.
IIT Kanpur announced in May this year that its board has approved a four-year Bachelor Science programme, and a five-year integrated Masters of Science programme in Statistics and Data Science. The course will be offered from the current academic year, 2021-22, by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
The programmes will focus on Computational and Data Science application courses and fundamentals of Statistics and Mathematics. It will allow students to select elective courses from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering, and is aimed at helping students master Big Data analytics.
The admissions for the programme will be through the Joint Entrance JEE (Advance).

This month, IIT Roorkee launched two new MTech programmes under its recently established Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS). The programmes, MTech in AI and MTech in Data Science, aim to advance the AI and data science applications and studies in the country, promoting training and development of human resources, applied research, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Candidates with a BE, BTech, Integrated MSc or equivalent degree in any engineering science discipline are eligible to apply for the course. They should have a CGPA of 6.0 to appear for the entrance examination and online interview.

In April this year, IIT Madras’ Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI and Narayanan Family Foundation collaborated to launch a fellowship programme to attract researchers working on AI for social good. The fellowship has been designed by Professor B Ravindran and is aimed at enabling learners to establish independent research profiles and contribute to socially relevant AI research.
Recent PhD graduates, early career researchers in computer science, biomedical sciences, computational and data sciences, finance, the management or other engineering branches can apply for this fellowship programme. Fellows will be paid Rs 15- 18 lakh for the research, depending on their experience.

IIT Madras has launched a 12-weeks AI course on the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) platform, called ‘Artificial Intelligence Search Methods for Problem Solving.’ Professor Deepak Khemanu will deliver the sessions from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras.
The course begins on July 26. Candidates can enrol until August 2. While the course is free to audit, you have to pay Rs 1,000 to take the test scheduled for October 23.

Department of Information Technology in NIT Karnataka, Surathkal, recently announced that the Academic Senate, Board of the institute and Union Ministry of Education have approved a new four-year BTech course in AI. Admissions will be based on the JEE (Main) examination.
The course will offer specialisations in data science, human-centred computing, cyber-physical systems, and robotics, making students industry-ready.
The certificate programme in ML and AI with Python by IIT Bombay is aimed at making students industry-ready. The course will teach you to sort (Python, NumPy and Pandas), study and rearrange data, run analyses, and build DataFrames from scratch. Students will learn Scikit and SciPy to construct predictive linear models for maximum precision; build text classification systems using linear classifiers and deep learning, and build agent-based models.
The six-month course is set to begin on June 30. The online classes will be conducted for three hours between 3.30 pm and 6 30 pm every Sunday and will cost Rs 1,25,000 plus taxes. Any graduate or diploma holder with a minimum of one year of experience can apply for the course. On the completion of the course, learners will receive a certificate from IIT Bombay.

IIM Bangalore has launched a live online programme on AI for digital transformation to equip learners with AI technologies that enable digital transformation in organisations. By taking the course, students will understand how data is accumulated, how software is built and tested, how decision-making is assigned to machines, types of biases, and how operations are scaled.
Upon completing the course, learners will have a firm grasp of concepts including AI, machine learning, neural networks, supervised learning, classification and prediction. The five-day course begins on September 13. The fee is Rs 76,950 for early birds and Rs 85,500 for candidates enrolling after August 23.

In collaboration with IBM, the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi has launched a nine-month-long PG Diploma course in Data Science and AI. The entire programme will be conducted online on weekends.
The course will equip students with the fundamentals of statistical analysis, mathematical analysis and optimisation; fundamental and advanced machine learning and deep learning; data engineering techniques; handling big data; in-depth understanding of various business application domains.
The diploma programme will allow professionals from different industry verticals– arts, commerce and medicine, to reboot their careers. Students with BTech or BE in CS/Math-and-Computing or BTech/BE in any discipline, MCA or MSc in Physics or Chemistry or Mathematics or Computer Science, or Bachelors in Economics or Mathematics or Statistics, or MBA, can apply for this course. Social science and healthcare students are also eligible to apply.
