Arizona Judge Weighs Whether Google App Use Sells Location Data – Bloomberg Law

An Arizona judge is questioning whether the users of Alphabet Inc.’s Google apps are effectively selling their data.
Google argues that a state law on consumer fraud can’t apply in a lawsuit from Arizona’s attorney general that claims the company misled consumers about location-tracking on apps like Search and Maps that are free to use.
“Is it really free? Isn’t there an exchange of something? Isn’t the consumer giving something up when they use those apps?” Judge Timothy Thomason asked during oral argument in Arizona Superior Court. Thomason is weighing Google’s motion for an early end to the case.
