BEACHWOOD, Ohio — The City of Beachwood has announced its schedule of concerts, both outdoor and indoor, for this summer. The city’s community services department has also announced a new name for the series — “Beachwood Beats.”
Outdoor concerts will again take place at the Family Aquatic Center on Tuesdays, while indoor concerts will be held Thursdays at the Beachwood Community Center, 25225 Fairmount Blvd. All concerts, outdoors and indoors, will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be free of charge.
The series kicks off June 7 with the Beatles tribute band Revolution Pie at the aquatic center.
Other outdoor shows scheduled at the aquatic center are: June 14 — Hip to That, playing jazzy pop; June 21 — the swing and blues of Blue Lunch; June 28 — Masterpiece, performing Motown, funk and R&B; July 5 — boogie woogie sounds from Red Light Roxy; July 12 — Billy & The Biscuits performing zydeco and Cajun music; July 19 — FM77 and sounds of the ‘70s; and July 26 — the big band music of the Dan Zola Orchestra.
The July 26 show will also include the annual salute to residents who have marked 50 years of living in Beachwood.
The indoor schedule looks like this: June 9 — Cliff Habian & Jeff Slater, playing piano and the upright bass, respectively; June 16 — the Calathea String Quartet and pianist Isabel Mearini; June 23 — Virginia Crabtree and Marshall Griffith, performing on flute and piano, respectively; June 30 — the string music of Opus 216; July 7 — pianist Harry Bacharach; July 14 — pianist Julia Russ; July 21 — violinist and pianist Mary Beth Ion and Mike Leamons; and July 28 — pianist Moss Stanley.
CWRU used book sale: The annual CWRU/ACE Book Sale hasn’t taken place the couple of years, no thanks to COVID. But that just means that the supply of books has accumulated, making for more good finds this year.
To check out what’s for sale, plan on being, sometime between June 4-7, at Case Western Reserve University’s Adelbert Gym, 2128 Adelbert Road in Cleveland.
You’ll find books about art, literature, history, politics, travel, home, sports, leisure, foreign language and the rare and unusual, as well as multimedia and paperbacks in 20 categories. To learn more, take a look at the ACE book sale Facebook page.
The sale preview happens from 10 a.m. to noon June 4 (admission is $20). The sale then begins that day (June 4) at noon, and goes to 5 p.m. (no admission charged).
Then, hours will be noon to 5 p.m. June 5. This will be Shopper Card Coupon Day. Coupons can be found on the Facebook page.
There will be reduced pricing from noon to 5 p.m. June 6, while hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7.
Juneteenth celebration at Ursuline College: Ursuline College and the City of Pepper Pike are holding a Juneteenth celebration in the college’s academic quad from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 18.
Music will be provided by The Cover Girls and the band Ikembe. The event is free. A traditional Juneteenth meal will be available for $5.
Featured will be vendors, Juneteenth swag, storytelling, a drum circle, face painting, an art station and more.
Juneteenth, which actually takes place June 19, has been made a federal holiday. It celebrates the freeing of enslaved people following the Civil War.
Ursuline College is located at 2550 Lander Road in Pepper Pike.
Taste of Pepper Pike: While we’re on the subject of Pepper Pike, tickets are on sale for its popular Taste of Pepper Pike event, scheduled for 5 toi 8 p.m. June 26. The event is returning for the first time since 2019, again because of COVID.
Nineteen restaurants have signed on to tempt you with their best offerings, which you can sample under a big tent. Tickets are $40 per person and include all food and beverages.
The city notes that this is an event for adults.
Purchase tickets online here or in person, from 7 a.m .to 2 p.m., at the Pepper Pike Service Department, 28000 Shaker Blvd. Taste of Pepper Pike will take place at Ursuline College.
A new brand for Beachwood temple: As part of its 2017-22 strategic plan, Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple set out to develop and launch a strong new brand and presence. At its May 15 annual meeting, the branding was unveiled, including a new logo and website, mission and vision statements, and outdoor signage in front of its property, 23737 Fairmount Blvd.
Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, of Beachwood, as part of its rebranding, has a new logo. The temple has also released a short film that discusses its new brand.
The temple’s senior rabbi, Robert Nosanchuk, said these additions are just the start of what is to come. Temple clergy, in a video created by Steven Hacker Films, explain the changes. You can see that four-minute video here.
College news: Congratulations to University Heights’ Aaron Clements, who was named to the Southern New Hampshire University dean’s list for the winter semester.
Also due congratulations is Shaker Heights’ Evan Muzilla, a mechanical engineering major, who received his bachelor’s degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts on May 14.
Meanwhile, those earning dean’s list status for the spring semester at Bowling Green State University are Cleveland Heights’ Danajah Mills and Malachi Jenkins, Shaker Heights’ Amanda Woolley and Lauren Hussell, and Beachwood’s Thomas Ziebro and Kyle Oliver.
And, among those making the dean’s list at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, were Caroline Kiker and Sonia Levin, of Shaker Heights.
Beachwood Arts Council presents Botanical Resurgence: The Beachwood Arts Council will sponsor the art exhibit, Botanical Resurgence, June 1-25 at the Beachwood Community Center, 25225 Fairmount Blvd.
Thirteen artists from Allegheny Highlands Botanical Art Society (AHBAS) will display their work, including watercolors, pencil drawings and prints.
Through artwork, AHBAS seeks to educate the public about plant diversity, native plant ecology and conservation. Based in Pittsburgh, the organization includes members from western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia.
Exhibit hours for Botanical Resurgence are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. For additional hours, call the City of Beachwood, weekdays, at 216-292-1970.
An opening reception will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. June 4, during which visitors will have an opportunity to meet the artists and watch a painting demonstration.

Heights Libraries happenings: The Coventry Village Library will host an author’s chat with Dan Chaon, whose newest newest thriller, “SleepWalk,” is described by the library as a “high speed and darkly comic road trip through a near future America with a big hearted mercenary.”
The event is being held in partnership with Mac’s Backs Books on Coventry. The event will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. June 4 outdoors in the PEACE Park, across the street from the library, weather permitting. A book signing will follow. Register here.
And, the University Heights Library will host a children’s (up to age 11) “Arts and Crafts in the Park” event, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. June 8 at Walter Stinson Park, 2313 Fenwick Road. Register here.
