Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop, City Council members and the JC Carnival Family are celebrating Caribbean culture by raising the CARICOM flag at City Hall on Wednesday, July 6, at noon. The event will take place at the Jersey City Hall Chambers, 280 Grove St., Jersey City. The CARICOM flag represents all of the Caribbean community at large.
Get healthy with free nutrition classes
Rutgers University is hosting free nutrition classes at the Secaucus Public Library from 6 to 7 p.m. on July 5, 12, 19, and 26. You can register on the library calendar at secaucuslibrary.org. The classes will take place in the Panasonic Room on the 2nd Floor. The Secaucus Public Library is located at 1379 Paterson Plank Rd., Secaucus.
Speranza Theatre’s Free Summer Camp with Jersey City Public Schools
Speranza is teaching a free summer theatre camp with Jersey City Public Schools from July 5 to July 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are several spots open in all three locations at PS #3, PS #17, and PS #26. Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
The free 3 three-week camp is open to any Jersey City Public School student going into grades 3 to 5 for next school year. Students will write, rehearse, and perform their own original play with family and friends invited to watch the performance on the final day of the program. The theme is Theatre Around The World. Liberty Science Center open all summer with one exception
Liberty Science Center will be open on our nation’s birthday on Monday, July 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. but beginning Wednesday, July 6, the Science Center will be open every day except Monday for the rest of the summer, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Liberty Science Center is located at 222 Jersey City Blvd., Jersey City.
History and nature programs at LSP
Explore the Hudson River estuary on Saturday, July 2, with a hands-on adventure to Caven Point Beach from 10 a.m. to noon. The group will meet in Lot #1 located at 300 Morris Pesin Drive and then walk over to the beach. The walk is about a mile and a half long and visitors should dress to be outdoors and wear shoes that can get dirty. The program is open for all ages.
Then, Liberty State Park will have a tour and discussion about the land known as Black Tom and how the events leading up to the explosion served as a catalyst for America’s entry into World War I on Wednesday, July 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The program includes a 45-minute Power Point presentation and discussion, a look at artifacts recovered from the site, and then a drive to the Black Tom site. You will need your own transportation to get there, and the program is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Finally, visitors can join LSP’s trail steward on a walk through the Nature Center’s pollinator and wildlife gardens on July 10 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to learn about native plants in New Jersey and their value to wildlife. The group will meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way. Free parking is available in Lot #6, across the street from the center and all ages are welcome.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and you can register a maximum of six participants per reservation. Also, pets are not permitted on programs unless they are service animals.
