Typically, MasterClass, an online learning platform with courses taught by celebrities and experts, can only be accessed with an unlimited membership ($180 for the whole year).
But MasterClass’s newest addition, “Black History, Black Freedom, and Black Love,” can be taken completely for free all through February for Black History Month.
Seven renowned Black visionaries share their insight on the reckoning with race in America in three parts: past, present, and future.
Broken down into three parts, the fully-online program is taught by seven high-profile, multi-disciplinary Black intellectuals: Jelani Cobb, Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, Angela Davis, Sherrilyn Ifill, Nikole Hannah-Jones, John McWhorter, and Cornel West — and handles 400 years of racial history in a total of 10 hours.
Part I (The Past) delves into the relationship between slavery and American capitalism, white supremacy and the 14th Amendment, and the history of voter suppression and education equality.
Part II (The Present) examines the origin of critical race theory, which has become a hot-button political issue, the historic “Brown vs. Board of Education” Supreme Court case, and the legacy of Thurgood Marshall.
Part III (The Future) addresses how members can apply what they’ve learned to create a just society.
If you’re looking to learn more about Black history during Black History Month, this is an excellent opportunity; It’s free, the work of sourcing and compiling experts of diverse disciplines has been done for you, and the cinematic production value is characteristically excellent.
As a bonus, if you’ve been considering buying a MasterClass membership, it doubles as a peek into the experience of a MasterClass, too (though most MasterClass courses have a single instructor).
You can begin watching “Black History, Black Freedom, and Black Love” right now. The class will also eventually be available to stream for free on IMDb TV and available for all Prime Members through a distribution partnership with Amazon.
