LIVING Well has launched a free offer inviting all adults who are above a healthy weight and living in Bradford district to sign up for 12 weeks’ completely free membership to a weight loss programme of their choice to work towards achieving a healthier weight.
The offer which has already seen over a thousand Bradford residents sign up in its first week, includes four options that people can choose from: Weight Watchers (WW), ShapeUp4Life, Slimming World and GetSlim.
Living Well is an initiative led by Bradford Council’s Public Health team and NHS Bradford and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group, working to make it easier for people living in Bradford district to live healthier and more active lives. This latest free offer has been funded using dedicated money from central government’s Department of Health and Social Care to help reduce the number of overweight adults as part of a national effort to improve outcomes from Covid -19.
Maintaining a healthy weight has six benefits that could have a lasting impact on people’s health:
• Decreased risk of common cancers (colon, liver, pancreas, kidney)
• Lowered risk of increased blood pressure
• Reduced risk of heart disease
• Less risk of developing diabetes
• Less strain from chronic back and joint pain
• Decreased risk of being hospitalised or becoming seriously ill with COVID-19
Everyone is different so finding a healthy way to lose weight that works for you is key to success. By offering a choice of providers Living Well aims inspire and support people living in Bradford district to commit to a 12-week weight loss programme and ultimately give them the confidence to continue with their healthy new habits for life.
The range of programmes people can access all offer lots of different resources including; a range of global recipes, plans tailored to individual needs, workouts for all abilities, professional coaches and even a barcode scanner to help when you shop! Some of the programmes on offer are online/app-based only, while others include face-to-face local group meetings along with digital options, so people can choose whichever style of programme they feel will work best for them.
Rose Dunlop, Consultant in Public Health said “Over 65% of adults in Bradford district are overweight or obese and this can lead to greater numbers of people experiencing preventable health conditions. Lots of us struggle with excess weight and we know that eating a balanced diet and being physically active for just 20 minutes every day can transform our health wellbeing, however it can be tough to achieve this by ourselves. Through this new Living Well offer, Bradford residents can now access 12 weeks of tailored support and information on what a healthy balanced diet can look like for them with meal ideas they will really enjoy, all entirely free of charge”.
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, portfolio holder for Healthy People and Places, said: “Losing weight isn’t easy, but with the host of resources from the companies within this Living Well offer, it’s a lot more achievable and can make a real difference to helping people lose and then keep the weight off for good. Typically, joining these programs often means paying membership costs upfront and this can put some people off trying them so it’s great to have this opportunity made available free of charge to everyone.”
To qualify for this free offer, people must be 18 years and over, have a BMI of 25 or more and live in Bradford district.
