CAMBRIDGE, MA — Harvard University students are organizing an abortion-rights rally Wednesday in Harvard Yard in the wake of a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would allow decisions on abortion to be made on a state-by-state basis.
The Supreme Court decision draft that was leaked Monday night would overrule the 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide and could lead to abortion bans in states throughout the United States.
Many state leaders from both parties came out in opposition to what appears to be the pending Supreme Court ruling that would essentially leave abortion rights up to elected officials instead of making it the law of the land.
If Roe V. Wade did become overturned, Massachusetts residents would still be protected by the state-level ROE Act, which allows abortions after 24 weeks in cases with a fatal fetal anomaly and in situations when deemed necessary by a doctor.
On Tuesday, Massachusetts leaders including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Gov. Charlie Baker, U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins, House Speaker Ronald Mariano, and other elected officials were quick to voice opposition to the potential high court ruling.
Harvard University’s rally is planned for noon Wednesday.
