IMHO Reviews latest article in their series of reviews of online learning platforms talks about Domestika, a website that caters specifically to creatives. Domestika was founded in 2010 in Spain and later moved its headquarters to Berkley, California. It used to have courses only in Spanish, but over the last several years the platform has expanded tremendously and now has millions of users worldwide and a big selection of courses in English and Portuguese.
“All of Domestika’s courses are aimed at people who want to develop their creativity. There are courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced. You won’t find programming or coding courses there, but if you are interested in graphic design, photography, drawing, fine art, digital illustration, arts and crafts, or writing, then Domestika is a good choice for that,” said the owner of IMHO Reviews, Vitaliy Lano.
The article explains that Domestika courses are sold separately, and the prices vary from $10 to $40 per course. There is also an option of buying a bundle, each consisting of 3-6 courses, for a reduced price, or purchasing a Domestika Plus subscription. Domestika Plus members get one credit each month that can be exchanged for any course of their choice, and an additional 20% discount on all courses. Domestika also has a whole section of free courses that anyone can take at no cost.
“Domestika courses are taught by experts in their fields from all over the world. The courses are produced by Domestika itself which ensures that the quality is always superb. This is different from many online learning platforms where teachers have to produce their own courses. There are thousands of courses in the library on topics like Design, Illustration, Craft, Web and App design, Calligraphy and Typography, Fashion, Writing, 3D and Animation, Architecture and Space, Marketing and Business, Music and Audio, and Photography and Video. Plus there is a whole Domestika Basics section that has software courses for those who want to learn about Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, AutoCAD, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, etc,” added Vitaliy.
Domestika courses are usually 2-4 hours long, but some can be up to ten hours and more. Each course is divided into lessons. Students are given assignments, additional resources, and a final project that they need to complete. All courses have communities where students connect with each other and their teachers, ask questions, discuss ideas and share final projects. By the end of each course, it is possible to get a certificate of attendance. However, the IMHO Reviews article argues that the certificate itself doesn’t have much value, whether the knowledge gained by taking a course does.
The article discusses other online learning platforms and compares them to Domestika. The main two competitors are Skillshare and Udemy. Skillshare, a more popular one, offers unlimited access to all courses in its library at a monthly fee of $32 or $14 with the purchase of an annual subscription. It has courses on a much wider array of topics than Domestika and grants free access for 30 days to anyone who wants to try out the platform. Udemy, like Domestika, charges for each course separately, and the prices can be steep. The quality of courses is reported to be either hit or miss, but reading reviews before making a purchase helps avoid low-quality courses.
“After trying out Domestika for several months, we came to a conclusion that it is a great platform for creatives. The language barrier can be a dealbreaker for some people, but the number of English courses is rapidly growing, and courses in Spanish come with subtitles. Other than that, the platform offers great value for its money,” said Vitaliy.
