University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students started in-person classes Monday after nearly two years of online classes.
New Student Orientation hosted the event in the Campus Center Courtyard to reconnect students with campus services.
“This is our Welina Mānoa: We welcome all of our new students, specifically Spring 2022, right now to Mānoa,” said Ashley Terrell, NSO orientation leader and sophomore at UH Mānoa. “They get to introduce themselves to some of the departments that we have out here, like counseling, any resources that they might need, and a chance to pick up some free swag. For some people, this is their first chance to get some UH merch.”
According to Terrell, who is a marketing and international business major, NSO needed to push their event until in-person classes resumed which is why the kickoff took place this week instead of the first two weeks of the semester when classes were still online.

Some of the student services at the event included the Mānoa Bookstore, the YMCA, Native Hawaiian Student Services and the KOKUA Program.
For some like Kuʻulei Salzer, the Health Services alcohol and drug counselor, the kickoff provided the opportunity to interact with students again.
“I miss the students,” Salzer said. “I’m so happy to see their faces. You can’t really see their smiles, but you can see their excitement, and we’ve missed them. The energy is so good.”
Salzer said she also wanted to remind students of what Health Services offers, such as a full-service health clinic, health and wellness, upcoming events and more.

In addition to providing information about their services, each organization gave away free swag in addition to a ticket for the NSO raffle which included giveaways such as a $25 Dining Dollars gift card.
As students gathered all around the Campus Center, excitement filled the air as a sense of normalcy returned.
For Evan Peng, a junior mechanical engineering major at UH Mānoa, the kickoff was a chance to check out what was happening while being back in person, something he thought was “pretty exciting” after his first two years at UH Mānoa were online.
Although cases are still being reported on campus, the university continues to promote isolation, mask mandates, social distancing and encourages vaccinations and boosters to ensure students can remain in person.
On Friday, May 29, 2020, protestors gathered in front of the Hawaii State Capitol for a Black Lives Matter demonstration in honor of George Floyd and in protest of police brutality.
